Protecting tabs, or, force open links in new window
-
I wrote about this as a suggestion for v1.14.
I like most everything about Vivaldi, except the lack of option to force links to open in new tabs. I have pinned tabs, which are constantly being diverted to different urls, because of clicking on a link or opening a page from the password manager. Having to right click constantly on left arrow (or the alleged speed redial, it doesn't seem to work any different than the left arrow) to get back to the pinned arrow original location is a real time and click sink. I know it is possible to change this behavior since tabmix plus in firefox (before firefox ruined the use of many addins) used to have an option to protect or lock tabs, and force links to open in new tabs.I know. I can use special mouse movements or key strokes to open links in new tabs. Even if i remember to use them, it doesn't help opening sites from the password manager. Besides, if this can be automated, why force use of limited brain power to remember to do it?
Can we have these protect/lock tabs and force links to open in new tabs, in Vivaldi?

@astro46 Vote for Locking Pinned Tabs
If I open a link in the same tab by mistake, I just click on the Rewind button; then Shift+click to open the link in a new tab. I use GestureDown or Middle-click if I want to open a link in a new background tab. I seldom bother with the right-click menu.

as I mentioned, I know about the workarounds. nevertheless, having the options that I mentioned would be more efficient than using workarounds. Not to mention more elegant than having to do more clicking and keyboarding, when a setting would eliminate the issue.
btw: It seems that fast rewind takes me back to the first page of the site that I still don't want to be on, not to the page I was on before vivaldi drifted from the pinned tab.

Such a setting might eliminate one issue, but it would create a new one. There would then be no way to open a link in the same tab, and you must use extra clicks to close new tabs, instead of a simple mouse gesture to go back in the same tab.
I don't understand what you mean by opening a page from the password manager. If you mean bookmarks, there is a setting to always open bookmarks in a new tab.
There is already a feature request for Option to Open Links in New Tab by Default. It only has one vote.

thanks for the link to the feature request. the requested 12 days ago. It now has 2 votes! You imply that it had only one vote and therefore it must not be of interest to anyone. There are a couple of faults with that assumption. One is that everyone knows about the 'feature request' board. I hadn't noticed the 'feature request' board until you posted the link, having always gone directly to the Vivaldi for Windows board. Previously feature requests for 1.14 were handled as replies to a 1.13 announcement. . Second is assuming that people regularly scroll through feature requests looking for items to upvote.
Before Firefox thought it was a good idea eliminate the the ability to use Tabmixplus (and a number of other popular addons) many people, based on comments, were using Tabmixplus for the option of forcing links to open in new tabs, and to protect/lock pinned tabs. You may not care about this, but don't assume that other people don't. This is what options are about.
Your stated effects of having the option of opening links in a new tab won't be a problem for you. Simply don't select it as an option. Easy eh?

@astro46 Votes are an indication of a feature request's relative popularity. All other things being equal (which they're not) we would expect popular feature requests to be implemented sooner. So don't expect it at once is what I am saying.
Currently, without this feature, or with it off, anyone can easily open a link in a new tab or the same tab. With the feature enabled that won't be possible, so it's bad design, especially as each new tab spawns a new Vivaldi process.

I agree with astro46. I'm tired of having pinned tabs replaced because I didn't click 'new tab' before opening a new url or doing a new search.
