Vivaldi hangs when there is no internet

  • Hi,

This looks like a weird thing but I tried on multiple days and multiple WiFi networks and have rebooted the computer so many time in between and the behavior is consistent. The steps to reproduce the issue:

    1. Turn on the computer and boot into windows
    2. connect to a WiFi network with internet access
    3. open Vivaldi and open one or more tabs (for example some google searchers)
    4. put the computer into sleep (in my case also close the laptop lid after it is went to sleep)
    5. (open the lid and ) wake up the computer
    6. while it is trying to find a WiFi network, try to switch tabs in Vivaldi or close some tabs and etc.
    7. crash

    Computer's info:

    • OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Enterprise 2016 LTSB version 10.0.14393 Build 14393
    • Vivaldi: 1.14.1077 (stable channel) (32bit)

I'm happy to provide any log file or tests towards solving this issue.

In Windows 7 (32, Vivaldi last stable) it does not, I only get the image of Tony warning that there is no network available

Does Vivaldi it hang or does it crash/close? That is really a difference.

If it crashes you may find a crashdump at this time.

Please read Reporting Crashes on Windows
and How to report a bug for Vivaldi carefully
and then report the bug to Vivaldi bugtracker.

  • @gwen-dragon it hangs (does not respond to clicks). Few moments after wifi connection it suddenly applies all clicks you have done and starts working normally.

Based on your text I got the impression that there will be no crashdump and consequently I should not report this as a bug?

  • Just to weight in on this, I've been experiencing connectivity issues with my network but no problems with crashes or hanging on the latest snapshot. I suspected the issue might be to do with sync, but I have that enabled, so I don't think that would be the cause.

Maybe an extension trying to use the network and not being happy when it's unavailable?

I never experienced freezes after hibernation on my Windows 10 Pro.

We have some reports with hanging Vivaldi on some Windows after wakeup.
But that was not reproducible for testers and devs.

  • @m-mahmoudian I think I noticed the same behaviour in 32-bit at my first Vivaldi install a week ago. (latest Win10 ver. & Vivaldi: 1.14.1077 (stable channel) (32bit)

I recognized later that there was a 64-bit also. Because of this behaviour I gave Vivaldi a second chance in 64-bit.

And now in 64-bit version it seems ok.

    But unfortunately I canΒ΄t help.

  • @lonm If it is the issue caused by an extension, I should get the same effect in other operating systems as well. I have Vivaldi on Solus as well (same laptop) and I don't see the same effect.

I have installed this for some time and since then I have not seen any crashes or blockages for reasons of CPU / RAM overload, apart from the fact that the more demanding programs work with much more fluidity
See if it's good for you too

  • @catweazle I checked explicitly through the task manager.the CPU usage was 2% and memory was almost empty (since for the sake of testing I closed everything except Vivaldi) I don't think the issue has anything to do with CPU or RAM load since the other softwares and windows menus work just fine.

Ok, it was just an idea. Anyway it is a recommended app, because Windows is quite deficient in adjusting the CPU response time in each moment, this is what this program optimizes

  • Just for the record:

    Issue Collector created VB-38533:

Summary: Vivaldi hangs when there is no internet
    Key: VB-38533
    Project: Vivaldi Browser

  • @m-mahmoudian @Gwen-Dragon

I have similar symptoms after attaching/detaching notebook (HP) with Win 10 (x64 Pro, build 1607) to/from docking station with ethernet cable (= during switching between WiFi / LAN)

It happens in 30-50% of cases.
Most of the problems happen after auto-entering any of the sleep the states (for example when I go with notebook to another room)

The result is usually ~30 second long hang of Vivaldi UI.
There is no "app no responding" label nor grayed out window content. But Vivaldi suddenly starts handling all of window events after delay.
So it seems as problem on higher level than Windows message processing loop.

I cannot determine the exact build number (of Vivaldi) when problems started because I own this notebook since beginning of february...

I have high uptime of V / Windows on this machine.
I usually work with latest x64 Snapshots.

I remember that I had similar problems in the past with another browser a few years ago and I realized that turning off the hibernation service (I never use it), everything worked without problems. Can be this?
