@Pesala
hmm, doesn't work for me, Vivaldi 3.5.2130.3 (Official Build) (64-bit) -
@Stardust Check for updates.

@Pesala
I can't update so far (Linux), but I have the same issue on Stable - Vivaldi 3.5.2115.81 (Stable channel) (64-bit) -
@Pesala
here is a demo gif (Vivaldi 3.5.2115.81 (Stable channel) (64-bit)) -

@Komposten got it now. I thought it was for the left click and not for context menu...
-
@Stardust Thank you! It's great to have this option implemented.
-
@Gelf you're welcome (if I helped you somehow)

I'm an experienced user - over the last 20+ years, I've used Netscape, IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and now Vivaldi. I was switching from Chrome to Opera, and discovered the change in ownership to a Chinese group. I am now discarding Opera. In installing and working with Vivaldi, I nearly discarded it on the basis of this issue. With the help of the Forum I found a workaround I can live with. But to the developers PLEASE TAKE THIS ISSUE SERIOUSLY! This issue is handled differently than any other browser I have used, and for no good reason that I can see. PLEASE bring this function into line with other browsers. By the way, I did try the Extensions mentioned earlier in this thread, and discarded them, as the Tab positioning or cycling doesn't operate as expected.

@becker44a The option you are asking for has been in Vivaldi for several months now for all new tabs from links. Why you would want to open every empty new tab in the background escapes me. If you don't want to do work in the new empty tab, why open it at all, ever? What use is an empty background tab? Genuinely curious.

There is a good reason:

We discussed this request internally and we like the idea but came to the conclusion that though it's possible to implement this feature, it would be very difficult to do it properly as opening links works differently on various websites. Let's imagine we add this feature and every single link you click on a page opens in the background. It would create a huge number of opened tabs and take quite some resources and time to manage and close them all would amount to more than spending a second more to use already available options. Furthermore, it would cause issues or even break many websites. For example, going through the process of paying for online purchases. When each click opens a new tab there are so many things that could go wrong resulting in a failed transaction or double payment.

I must admit I had not read to the end of this thread before posting - new user here. I am running in Linux Mint 19.3, and installed Vivaldi in the last 2 weeks or so. The Vivaldi package version is vivaldi-stable 3.6.2165.36-1,
and the following line is in my apt configuration:
deb http://repo.vivaldi.com/stable/deb/ stable mainJust checked for updates - none available. Hope it will show up soon. I know I don't get the latest of everything, as 19.3 is an LTS release, and I choose the stable versions of most packages.
@Ayespy
Sometimes if I run a Google search I look at a number of results, open selected links, then go to each in turn to see if anything useful is there. Also when browsing some Forums, I open a number of posts in new tabs before leaving the forum page to read the posts. I don't work this way in every situation but I use both the forgoing examples nearly every day. -

That's the latest stable version of Vivaldi.
Look in settings for
New Tab from Link Opens in Background
.Though, as I mentioned a few posts ago in this thread, it doesn't make left-clicking on links open them in the background. It only changes the context menu options. I'd suggest Ctrl+Click or Middle Click on links to open them in the background if you want to do it with a single click.

@Komposten
Found it - I didn't know the name of the setting before. Enabled it, tested it - now it works as expected.
Thanks for that !!! -
Is there option to make in new tab (foreground and background) from Url bar with "Enter"?

hmm, doesn't work for me, Vivaldi 3.5.2130.3 (Official Build) (64-bit)I am looking for the option "New Tab from Link Opens in Background", but I can't find it under "Settings > Tabs > Tab display > Tab Options". I use the newest Windows version of Vivaldi: "3.6.2165.40 (Stable channel) (32-bit)".
Without this option, Vivaldi is useless for me. Does anyone know why this option is missing?
-
@Robbo44 It's there, but category seems changed:
New Tab Position.

@Stardust I found it. Thank you.

Don't worry about the "Open New Tabs In Background" because it doesn't work like you think it would work. The only way I got it working close to what it was on Opera and many other GOOD browsers in the past is to use the "Force Background Tab" extension.
At least that extension did what Vivaldi should have added a long time ago, the ability for a person to use the left mouse button to open an EXTERNAL link in a background tab. If the link is in the same domain, it would work like a normal right mouse button and open in same tab.
Vivaldi would have none of that. You mean a working extension that does what users want? The last two "updates" they broke the function and randomly causes problems if you use mouse gestures to close the window to the right of your tab instead of your current tab. It would switch tab if you move to a tab left of your position, but if you clicked on the right side of the tabs, it does not switch windows.
Vivaldi is focused on one important thing; creating useless features. People want this ability to open EXTERNAL links in background tab for YEARS and they will NEVER RESPOND. However, they have free time to add stuff like 1980's games to the browser. They need to get their act together. At the minimum, fix the damn bugs that keeps cropping up in each release. Its like a landmine with every release. You KNOW new bugs will crop up. You almost have to find a version that has the least destructive amount of bugs and keep that revision for years.
Enough of my rant, but Vivaldi don't care about users when it comes to this feature. The create a "New Tab from Link Opens in Background" that doesn't work properly. Its become a running joke. Opera got their user interface right but they switched to Chrome and went downhill fast. Opera original was the fastest and the best interface. Too bad they were not able to maintain and compete with the chrome wannabes.
