Backup Issue

  • This is really a Windoze question but i'm hoping some of you use Scheduled Tasks to backup key Vivaldi files and may have run into this problem:

On my Win7-64 machine I have a scheduled task to run a bat file that calls XXCOPY to backup bookmarks & Login Data. The task is set to run with "highest privileges" (and i'm admin) It copies bookmarks fine but complains that Login Data can't be copied because it's in use. But if I go into Explorer I can copy the file manually without issue.

    Any ideas?

    1. Make sure the task is scheduled to "start in" the folder containing the batch file: task scheduler > task properties > actions > highlight the action > edit > start in > enter the full path to the batch file. Make sure the task is set to 'run whether logged in or not'.

    2. Make sure both the batch file and the entire folder tree in which it's located each have been explicitly assigned "full control" permission assigned for the admin account accessing it... don't rely on inheriting permissions. Likewise, make sure files targeted by the batch file (and their folders) have been explicitly assigned "full control" permission for the admin account accessing them.

    3. Make sure each and every path specified in the batch file is full, complete and explicit. The Task Scheduler assumes no defaults in interpreting paths.

  • Thanks for your help @Blackbird

I went thru your list and I also set the shortcut to start Task Scheduler to "Run as Admin" (from the context menu) but, so far, nothing has worked. I'm backing up both bookmarks & Login data by exactly the same methods and bookmarks works and Login data doesn't.

    It's still a mystery.

@kosmonaut login data is encrypted. I'm not sure it can be backed up at all, except by simply copying the file to some other directory.

The OP said he can manually copy the Login file (as well as bookmarks) to another folder, but when he tries to use a batch file via Task Scheduler to make the copy, it doesn't/won't copy (though the bookmarks file will copy). To me, it sounds like some kind of path/permissions issue (especially the latter)... Task Scheduler is known to be very "fussy" about certain things like that.

  • Thanks for you thoughts @Ayespy

Unfortunately I missed school the day they taught about encrypted files so it's a mystery to me but I find that I can use Windoze native XCOPY utility with the /g switch which allows copying encrypted files. It worked fine in a test file:

    xcopy /g /y "F:\Source\Default\Login Data" H:\Destination\Vivaldi\

so other than integrating this into my backup.bat I guess i've solved the problem. Thanks all of you who replied!

@kosmonaut You cn copy the files, but you can use it only on the installed Windows + Windows account where you had copied from.
Why? The encryption key is bound to the Windows Unique User ID.
