Every update fails

  • Every single Vivaldi update for the last ~6 months fails to install.
I've tried deleting registry keys, clearing temp files, nothing works.

The only way I can get new versions is by totally uninstalling my current Vivaldi, then downloading the new .exe and re-installing.

Any ideas? I love Vivaldi but this is a huge PITA, I finally broke down and did this 2 days ago and I'm already getting, "New update" and when I install, "An unexpected problem has occurred. Try closing vivaldi and running it again"

@composmentis Hmmm, strangely, I personally did not notice a similar problem in the last 3 years. If you are using Per User installation type, try installing the Standalone version (download and install some older 1.13 for example) and then updating it on 1.14.

@composmentis Cannot reproduce this. All updates, on all versions here (Stable, Snapshot, internal tester version) proceed smoothly. What can you tell us about your system, your exact OS version, and any security software that you run? Do you do anything other than simply install per the installer defaults?

Do you manually install the Auto Update? The Standalone is a good idea, since you install Vivaldi from the scratch.

and when I install, "An unexpected problem has occurred. Try closing vivaldi and running it again"

Before installing, make sure there is no Vivaldi process still running.

    My system build is Intel i7 6700k, 32Gb DDR4 3000 MHz RAM, Windows 10 Pro x64

I don't change the installer defaults at all, no.
I've tried force closing all Vivaldi processes, update notifier included, and running the downloaded executable but I get the same result.

  • Update: As of now, the problem is gone.

It's been happening for months but about 2 hours ago I disabled Hyper-V and installed VMWare Workstation 14

I'm guessing the issue was somehow related to Hyper-V?

  • @composmentis apparently it seems so =) Anyway, you should have specified from first you are trying to use some virtual machines, and not simply Windows 10. That's some quite different setup than all others who have no problems installing Vivaldi. Whatever is Hyper-V, now this thread could be useful for others having the same problem.

  • To be clear, Vivaldi is installed on the host machine, not inside a guest VM.
I can't think of ~why~ the Hyper-V service/platform would be interfering with Vivaldi at all, but - if anyone else is having this issue - seems like you can blame Microsoft for 1 more thing.

May be this issue is a bug.
Please read How to report a bug for Vivaldi carefully and then report the bug to Vivaldi.
