How to Restore mouse gestures ?
-
Hi, I would know if somebody knows if it's possible to restore the mouse gestures without deleting my profile folder ? I know gestures have been broken and fixed in the last version (thanks the auto update) for a fresh and clean install but i would prefer not to delete my profile to not lost all my cookies, password, bookmarks, customized preferences, ... By the way, where the 'import' button has been hidden in this version ? Thanks

You've posted in the All platforms forum, and the following is only relevant to a typical Windows installation:
One approach would be to back up all your current profile (usually C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Vivaldi), uninstall Vivaldi and do a fresh install of the latest snapshot, and then just copy back to your new profile the relevant files for the cookies, passwords, bookmarks, preferences, etc that you want to keep. Usually those files would be contained in C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data\Default.
For an example, see the list of 13 files I've been using in a similar way here. My list doesn't include passwords as I don't use that feature, but I imagine the relevant password files are Login Data and Login Data-journal. Maybe someone else can confirm that, or you might try saving a new password and see if those files are updated when you do to confirm it. But if those aren't the files, at worst, you would have to try others from your backup.
But if it was me, I would leave my current installation alone and simply install the newest snapshot in a standalone installation (click the Advanced options button on the installer UI, select a new destination folder of your choosing, and select Standalone installation), then copy the relevant files (above) to the new standalone Profile\Default folder. That way, if anything goes wrong you still have your old installation and can simply deleted the new standalone installation and start over.

Thanks for your help.
The method your describe was exactly the one i 've began before post the the forum.
I stop because of the number of files present in the profile directory and because of my lack of understanding of their roles.
For example there is a 'Top sites' and 'Top Sites-journal' files for a 123Mo size. Do i need to restore them ? What are the purpose of them ?I did not found a gesture file. it would be easier to simply delete it.

I don't use mouse gestures and don't know how/where they are stored in the installation, but the file list I mentioned covers everything you mentioned you wanted to save from your profiles, except passwords, and I'm guessing the other 2 (Login Data and Login Data-journal) will cover that.
I'm not even sure I need all 13 of the files in my list. Those are just the ones that appeared most likely to be relevant to cover what I needed the first time I tried it. Since those 13 did, in fact, work for everything I've needed so far, I haven't yet gotten around to seeing if I could copy even fewer; I just copy those 13 and go.
I also have wondered what the Top Sites file is and why it grows so large, but I haven't copied it to any of my new installations and haven't missed it. It certainly doesn't appear to have anything to do with settings/preferences/etc unless it is somehow tied to the thumbnails Vivaldi keeps for many/most/all the sites visited (see vivaldi://thumbnails), which I have no use for at this point.
Bottom line, though, at this point in Vivaldi's development, I'm pretty sure the best answer will come from just trying what I suggested with those 15 files in a standalone installation and see if it does what you need with mouse gestures. (If you have the hard drive space, it probably would take only about 15-20 minutes to find out.)

I believe it's meant for auto completion of the already typed urls, and maybe for a possible future start bar like feature.

Ahh… Well, that seems like it might fit the file name and got me thinking: If the Top Sites file is (or is intended to be) a single file analogous to the VPS folder in Olde Opera's user profile that would explain why it grows so fast and gets so large.
The Olde Opera VPS folder was/is enabled by selecting "Remember content on visited pages" in Olde Opera's preferences, and the folder contents allowed (among other things?) address bar auto-completion searches to include content of previously visited pages (in addition to bookmarks, previous searches, etc.). But I always disabled that option because the VPS folder would grow huge and was (for me) just a waste of precious HDD space.
So if the Top Sites file is storing all that same kind of info in a single SQLite3 DB (which appears to be the file type, as are many other Chrome/Chropera/Vivaldi profile files), it would understandably grow rapidly and get very large.
…But if that is the case, then to get back to Minskaya's question, the Top Sites file isn't really a preferences/settings file and certainly wouldn't be necessary (for most users) to carry over to a new profile.
