Private Windows -- WHY?

  • Invitation to users who use V or any browser in PW mode... pls help me to understand why you do so. I am simply damned if i can comprehend the motivation / use-cases for PW, given that the name is a total misnomer... no browsing conducted in a PW is actually private at all; you still leave your digital footprints all over the web anyway. In fact, for V specifically, you are even more exposed than normal, given that extensions do not operate in V's PWs. **

I am keen to learn & understand your motivations for PWs; pls kindly elucidate.

** EDIT: Correction - struck-out as my statement was wrong; thanks https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/192805

  • I guess most people use PW just not to leave awkard history on the machine.
Or maybe just to avoid having any kind of history.
I'm pretty sure is not for security in most cases as is actually not secure :P

Errr... They do if you activate "Allow in incognito" under Tools/Extensions!

Thanks, i appreciate your fast reply.

But you see, that's part of why PWs puzzle me [i mean, the people who choose to use them puzzle me]. Are all these users delusional? Of course there is history, just coz it might not be on their local machine is not at all the same as there being no history at all. Their footprints are in their ISP's logs, their VPN's logs, their visited websites' logs, & of course if they're dim enough to use Google/Yahoo/Bing etc for their searches then there too. Natch it's also all now in the GCHQ/NSA/ASIO/FSA et al servers. How's any of this "private"?

So, the name "Private Window" IMHO remains an utter misleading name, & surely people using it are not gaining the end result they imagine they are gaining?

Am i being too analytical here? Does PW exist, when boiled down to basics & dropping any pretence of niceties, simply so that shitty men can cheat on their wives/girlfriends/husbands/boyfriends undetected by them, & so that pimply-faced adolescent boys can keep their online jerk-off material "secret" from Luddite parents? Is that really all PW is actually aimed at?

    Yup, in most cases.
It's a mode for people who do things not to be seen by near people. (Not always cheating, it's more to keep plain browsing hidden)
Unofficial/vulgars names often are "gift mode", "pr0n mode", "history less mode".
But yeah, name is strange. Should be called "history-less mode" but it sounds quite ugly.
If a luddite know how look things to the server side is quite useless, I know.

  • @hadden89 Ah, ok, so i was overthinking it then. It really is simply a shallow tool for shallow people. Name is still wrong, but given the immorality* of the people who apparently like PWs, i don't care any more... let their cards lie where they fall.

Many thanks for helping me to understand.

    * this comment is reserved ONLY for the adults using it to cheat. I am NOT applying it also to the PFAB's, who i suppose are simply enslaved by their hormones.

  • @steffie said in Private Windows -- WHY?:

Many thanks for helping me to understand.

Some (unexpert) people tend to use this at work to have a (false) sense of security... but it's clearly useless if company monitor the traffic :P
"Experts" use their mobile traffic instead.

  • It also has some privacy application for a computer shared by multiple users who choose to not have separate user accounts for each. Based on past postings in certain threads here in these forums, there are indeed such individuals who share a browser and want to use it without leaving trails for the others who share it. To my thinking, a far better way is employing password-protected user accounts for each user... but I've been told by such users that such an approach is 'inconvenient'.

  • @blackbird Fair enough, i suppose, though i entirely agree with your philosophy on this. I guess i just still do not understand people.

Actually, i have now contemplated a legitimate potential application for PWs, reprehensible though the need for it certainly is. A battered wife/girlfriend in a horrific entrapped domestic violence scenario, might be able to use PWs to research her flight options, safe refuge options, support group options, finance & medical options etc, in the days/months/years that she is trying to discover & plan her possibility for escape/rescue from the monster.

  • @steffie Whew, you are a misanthropic individual ;)

Just to give you another "use case" and to lessen the impact of private windows on you surely otherwise untainted view of the world, I use private windows for sites I don't want to leave any unwanted prints like cookies or local stored data in my browser. For example, I only usse facebook in private mode, so I don't have to exit the browser or manually clean any cookies afterwards. Close the private window and - poof - all traces of facebook which otherwise might have made me trackable by facebook are gone for good.

Of course, I might not have changed my IP manually - but seeing that I often browse via VPN I can sort of hide in other people's traffic, more or less.

Also, searching for and buying presents for my wife or kids, especially those intended as surprises, may well be done in private mode, so if entering something in the address bar will not inadvertently show what I was searching for the other day.

Hopefully your outlook on the (male?!) world just got a tad better ;-p

  • @morg42 I don't use Farcebuck & never will... at least, not with its current abysmal business model of stealing naive users' info, commodifying & monetising them, making privacy difficult or impossible. That's before i even begin to rant about FB & other comically-named social media being vital tools of the rabid RWNJs.

As for my views on men, i have ample evidence to sour my mind on them. Until proven otherwise* on a case by case basis, they are simply dick-driven seed-sprayers unimpaired by novelties like fidelity & pacifism. A contemporary outrage currently raging in Oz, btw; http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/pressure-mounts-on-barnaby-joyce-over-involvement-with-staffer-20180210-p4yzwf.html, http://www.smh.com.au/comment/the-remarkable-privilege-of-being-a-male-politician-20180209-h0vtwc.html. Of course there's also the orange-moron in washington [/florida], & the oppressive male-dictated religions globally. Historically, remind me how many wars, invasions, murders, rapes, enslavement etc were initiated & perpetuated by women?

    * Lest you misinterpret me as a complete misandrist, i would pre-emptively correct you that i am instead merely an incomplete misandrist :-) ... LOTS of men have indeed proven themselves, & i would never claim otherwise. Sadly though there's ample evidence of the others, as well... Far too often, Mars might as well be in a separate solar system to Venus.

  • @steffie Oops, did I tread on a sore point there? :D

I wasn't trying (and never would) to recommend FB to you, as I know your position there. It just made an example case how to use PW to lessen it's impact on storage requirements for local cookies ;)

On men, I might be a bit biased, but I have a clean conscience, at least concerning myself :)

  • @Steffie You sound like a very paranoid, jealous and distrustful wife (though I assume that you are not). If you fear that your partner is cheating on you with a private window, then your lack of communication and trust is the problem, not the private window.

Private windows are there to avoid leaving a local history/cookies etc. on the machine. If you have ever deleted a cookie then you have found a use-case for private windows. I like to utilise them e.g. for searching for presents and anything that requires inputting personal information (e.g. banking sessions, insurance, salary overviews, webmail, etc.). I do not want that anyone sitting behind my computer can fetch that data from auto-completion on some websites.

Of course, you [as many other V men herein], are indisputably fine upstanding honourable creatures. Hence, i did specifically write:

LOTS of men have indeed proven themselves, & i would never claim otherwise.

    Incomplete, not complete.

  • @steffie Actually, I did note your accurate remarks :) I just feared your famous sarcasm had inadvertently been replaced by a daunting sense of reality... which might not be a welcome notion to end a day on (if I guess your time zone correctly ;) )

  • @caine said in Private Windows -- WHY?:

I do not want that anyone sitting behind my computer can fetch that data from auto-completion on some websites.

By the time a person other than you has physical access to your pc, any perception of security/privacy is largely illusory.

As for your remarkable first paragraph, you have an astounding talent for extrapolating the entire universe from a small piece of fairy cake. If you do not grasp the Adamsish allusion, it means that you draw illogical & incorrect hypotheses from scant or absent data. In mathematical terms i opine you should not venture anywhere near a linear regression. In fact, everything in that apocryphal speculative para is incorrect. I am not in fact personally scarred by anything you invented. As i thought my words spelled out, unless i got the order of all the letters wrong, i provided multiple examples which did not involve me. I had no hidden agenda btw; those were not words of rage fuelled by personal circumstances... they are words of rage fuelled by historical & contemporary national & global realities. Are you the sort of person unable to be motivated by scenarios beyond your own personal life? I'm not.

  • @steffie Our posts crossed, I did not see your examples. My reaction was based solely on the earlier posts.

As I tried to emphasise (and obviously failed at), I do not think this applies to you, yet merely stated how you came across to me, thus creating a projection on the stereotypical. Yet as the saying goes, if you assume you make and ass out of u and me. So apologies if I caused any offence, that was not my intention. I just sensed a lot of emotion in your words. I am glad to hear that you in fact have not fallen prey to any unfaithful, cheating people (it are not just men, unfortunately).

Are you the sort of person unable to be motivated by scenarios beyond your own personal life?

I am afraid so. I have suffered enough years on this world to stop caring about scenarios on which I have no influence.

    your famous sarcasm

Me? I suspect you have inadvertently mixed me up with some other partial misandrist. Why, i don't think i can even spell sarkasm. What injustice will i suffer next; allegations that i am also cynical?

Between the three of us, we have all roles covered don't we :p

If the roles in that image were reversed, I doubt most men would mind.
