Black Death Bird Page in Vivaldi on Manjaro
-
Since ca 1 month I notice so called Black Death Bird Page, happening relatively often in Vivaldi on different websites.
(Maybe this is a coincidence but in this time patches for Meltdown and Spectre were implemented.)Do you have similar problems in Vivaldi?

@gwen-dragon
I am using a current Vivaldi - now 1.14.1077.41 (Stable channel) (64-bit),
a current Manjaro Linux[STABLE UPDATE] and a current ffmpeg codec under Manjaro.
Problem happened on many websites. Lately it was:

http://192.168.8.1/html/home.html (a modem site)As I remember this problem occur relatively often when I open 3-5 or more sub-websites from http://next.gazeta.pl/next/0,0.html

@gwen-dragon
for Vivaldi it is a package: vivaldi-ffmpeg-codecs 64.0.3282.119-1 from herecura -
@gwen-dragon
Maybe it is some graphics driver problem. I use a Linux free diriver: xf86-video-intel.
This weekend I have extensively tested my PC to check if this issue would occurs on other browsers. So I have opened many, many websites in Pale Moon browser (on websites, where this issue occurred in Vivaldi) and I have not notice this issue. -
@viava I tried each of those sites with my Snapshot... ALL opened correctly, no ex-parrots [including sub-sites]. In a moment i shall repeat the test, using latest Stable, & post an update here.
EDIT: Also 100% success with latest Stable.
These are my V's:

@steffie
This problem does not occur regular.
I just opened all 5 links listed in my previous post and there was no issue.
Important: at this moment I had 7 normally working tabs opened( those 5 + https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/24699/black-death-bird-page-in-vivaldi + Google Translate site ).After that, when I was on the tab http://next.gazeta.pl/next/0,0.html , I tried to open some more sub-websites (by clicking on middle mouse button and opening those tabs in the background).
I have opened 5 sub-websites in this way:
http://next.gazeta.pl/superfinanse/7,156831,22969144,bank-zwrocil-mi-oplate-chociaz-pobral-ja-prawidlowo-czasem.html

all 7 gazeta.pl tabs (although previously it was OK on first 2 tabs),
http://192.168.8.1/html/home.html (although previously it was OK),
Google Translate site (although previously it was OK).And still there is no issue on:
https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/24699/black-death-bird-page-in-vivaldi/2
all 2 twitter.com tabs.In between I have noticed that over 70% of my 4 GB RAM memory is in use and system started to use a SWAP memory (137 MB currently).
Maybe this has something in common with this issue? -
@viava I have 32 GB RAM, so if it does transpire to be a memory shortage for you, i won't be able to replicate it here, sorry.

@gwen-dragon
Yes, I can try it, but there is a problem.- I do not have a directory ~/.local/lib/vivaldi/
- User directory of Vivaldi in Manjaro is: ~/.config/vivaldi/
- Currently, there is no libffmpeg.so file inside the whole user directory ~/
- Currently, the file libffmpeg.so is located in /opt/vivaldi/ and in /opt/vivaldi/lib/ installed here by installer.
Those files are different form each other (1.4MB and 3.3MB) and different form libffmpeg.so from Ubuntu (2.7MB).
So where should I copy libffmpeg.so from Ubuntu?
-
@gwen-dragon
I want to try it, but maybe there is some difference between your Ubuntu and my Manjaro, as:- Currently I do not have a directory: /usr/lib/chromium-browser/ (and I do not have chromium browser installed too).
- Currently I have a file /opt/vivaldi/libffmpeg.so (installed during installation of vivaldi-ffmpeg-codecs ).
- Currently I have a file /opt/vivaldi/lib/libffmpeg.so (installed during installation of vivaldi ).
- As I understand it, the last command will overwrite the current file /opt/vivaldi/libffmpeg.so .
But you wrote:If that does solve the crashers, you have to delete the file /opt/vivaldi/libffmpeg.so
.
When I would delete it, I would have no file /opt/vivaldi/libffmpeg.so at all. Are you sure to delete exactly this file ?
So please check and confirm if those commands and directories are correct.

@gwen-dragon said in Black Death Bird Page in Vivaldi on Manjaro:
Where did i mention you have to use /usr/lib/chromium-browser/? I am irritated.
Please, do not be irritated at me Probably I misinterpreted this code line
ar p chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra_64.0.3282.140*.deb data.tar.xz | tar Jx ./usr/lib/chromium-browser/libffmpeg.so --strip 4
where I see/usr/lib/chromium-browser/
directory.
Though, frankly speaking, I was not sure, what this command would do, so I could understand it mistakenly.
Now I see that it is a directory inside packed .deb file. Sorry for deficiencies in my knowledge. My fault. -
@gwen-dragon OK.
Thank you for your explanation.
I just executed those commands. Then closed and opened Vivaldi and opened all those problematic websites.
Unfortunately I still have this issue (this time even on forum.vivaldi.net site). And once again I see that problems started when system started to use SWAP memory.
So maybe this is not libffmpeg.so issue but a problem of low memory under Vivaldi?Edit:
I just did next test as I wanted to check if this issue occur on Opera (a Chromium based browser) and it seems that there is no issue here (though I opened many problematic pages and used a lot of SWAP).
A file libffmpeg.so in Opera is different to those from Vivaldi and from Ubuntu/Chromium too.
Conclusion - it is not a SWAP + Manjaro problem.Edit2:
Next test. I copied libffmpeg.so from Opera to Vivaldi.
And again the issue occurred when system(Vivaldi) started to use SWAP memory.
IMHO, it confirms that this issue is based on Vivaldi and low RAM and probably is not libffmpeg.so related. -
After upgrade to Vivaldi 1.14.1077.45 this issue still occurs.
And now, after a serie of tests, I am sure that this is an issue of Vivaldi with low RAM and appears on every website ("Black Death Bird Page" appears when all RAM is used and Vivaldi starts to use SWAP memory).A question: Should I submit a bug report with this issue or this issue is already processed automatically as it was discussed on this forum?

I have used Vivaldi for several years, and just now began seeing this "black bird of death" icon, however it only happens on my Bing.com homepage. I see the desktop pic of the day for a second and then get the BBOD icon. It is NOT a memory issue, I have 24gb of memory. I am running KDE/Plasma on Solus. Intel 10100 processor 10th gen and using built in Intel Graphics. System monitor shows 1gb of memory in use and 0% cup use.

Black bird of death, huh? Windows users just call it a dead bird. Sorry, no particular advice, though searching in the forum for dead bird, perhaps allong with Bing, will come up with something.
