Option to Autohide Bookmarks Bar

  • There is a hack to do this via custom CSS, but it's far from optimal.

This feature should have some smarts, such as whether it triggers when the mouse is over the address bar but not when it's over the navigation buttons, or vice-versa. Also, perhaps some timing options (how quickly the bar displays, and how long you have to hover for it to appear).

Using Custom CSS is not a hack. If this was implemented as a feature it would also use CSS.

In my opinion, due to the proximity of the Bookmarks Bar to the Address Bar in its normal position this is never going to work well. The Bookmarks Bar is either going to show up when it's not wanted or be too slow to appear. A single-key shortcut like "b" or a mouse gesture is much better.

  • @pesala A mouse gesture for this would be weird, when the "gesture" should merely be moving where the bookmark bar will be. Anyway, that's a separate thing from this request.

I think it can work well--this isn't rocket science. Check out how Cent does it, for instance (and I doubt that was all done with CSS).

  • @Pesala I think this would work nicely. The bookmark bar appearing when it is not wanted is not a significant problem, since the autohiding bookmark bar would only be used by people who turn it on. Yes, they will often mouse over to the address bar without wanting to click a bookmark, but they will expect the bookmark bar to appear. In my opinion, the bookmark bar should appear instantaneously (no delay), floating over (not pushing down) the web page below. It wouldn't be that intrusive, and would be faster than any mouse gesture.

while you're right about the css, you are not about the placement of the bookmark bar. if you're reuuning windows download a copy of the cent browser cause unlike chromium and other chromium based browsers you can set the bookmark bar to autohide and the is more than one way to activate it on mouseover.

you do know your post was unnecessary, right? cause mine wasn't a dig at anyone. assuming so is wrong.

  • @MrGrimm It was necessary to educate you.

    • I have the navigation bar on the start page on autohide, because I almost never use it, but don't wish to hide it completely just in case I want to test something
    • I have the Windows taskbar on autohide at the bottom so that it does not popup constantly when I do not need it. It does still, sometimes, but not often enough to be irritating
    • In Opera 12.18 I have a button to show the bookmarks bar for 5 seconds so I can open it long enough to open a folder or click a bookmark without wasting the space.
    • Showing the bookmark bar on mouseover, which is what this feature request asks for, means that it will show up every time I move the cursor to the address field or to a tab unless I move it fast. 500 ms is long enough to show it accidentally, while any longer would be a hindrance if one did wish to show it.

In my opinion, this feature would be difficult to implement in a way that worked well for me. YMMV.

no it was not necessary to "educate" me and you know it. all you needed in your last post was
