How to Play Shockwave Flash?
-
- Opera 12.18 still plays them
- Opera 50 downloads them
- Vivaldi offers to download them
- Internet Explorer 11 blocks them, but allows them to play.
Should this risky content be blocked completely, or allowed to play if anyone trusts the source?
-
There's a third option: allow per site
-
Thanks that would help on a web site.
The problem is, I am trying to play a local file that has been downloaded.
-
I might be mistaken, but I remember that Irfanview had a plugin that could manage flash. I'm not sure if it extended to shockwave as well though.
-
@lonm That's what brought me here. Someone on the IrfanView forums reported that IrfanView was unable to play a SWF game. I downloaded the game to confirm the bug, and meanwhile discovered that it played in Opera 12.18 or in IE11 if unblocked, but Opera 50 and Vivaldi just downloaded it when the SWF file was dragged into a tab.
There is not much point in "downloading" a local file to the Downloads folder.
-
I can't test this myself, but if you made a basic html file in the same directory and embed the file, it might work. Like this:
<html> <body> <embed width="500" height="500" src="filename_here.swf"> </body> </html>
You would still need to manually allow flash.
-
@lonm Thanks. It still won't play manually though; nor if the page is reloaded after setting Flash to Always Allow.
-
@pesala What if you go here:
chrome://settings/content/flash
and under allow, click ADD, and then addfile:///C:/Users/your-username/Downloads/file.html
(maybe as well asfile:///C:/Users/your-username/Downloads/file.swf
for good measure) -
@lonm No. It just does not want to play ball. The HTML file was already there. Adding the SWF file did nothing.
-
@pesala Unfortunately, I can't think of anything else that would be preventing it from loading.
-
@gwen-dragon Still no joy.
-
I have uploaded the file to www.softerviews.org/Clipboard/Drod.swf to make sure we are testing the same thing.
-
@gwen-dragon Thanks. I have reported this in the bug-tracker.
