More Customization for the Speed Dial
-
@ghpy Yes, but it's OK for me to reduce from 120 to 110% to fit four instead of three so the idea is good if used sensibly. I said it to explain what the setting for Maximum Columns means.

I think a fixed number of column with auto-resizing would solve your problem ... a bit like the "Speed Dial 2" chrome extension .
A bit like Opera 12 as well...
-
Can't we get extension access for speed-dial page or it has been already discussed?. This will allow unlimited implementations of ideas.
-
@mubaidr
If I am correct, Vivaldi already supports the override API. -
@nekomajin Right, but I am talking about the content script support. Which would allow us to override the layout/colors with all the default content.

@rekuzar said in More Customization for the Speed Dial:
Changing the size of the elements (e.g. saying they should be 150 x 200px)
I think this will be clear if called "scale/custom size for thumbs without change UI scale" (I think it'll be done but I read some time ago this could cause regressions)
-
Oh yes, IMHO custom thumbnails and all the other fancy stuff is not half as important as the simple ability to resize thumbnails, or in other words use Zoom like with all the other pages.
Currently I can not even use 3 rows of TNs without the last row being cut off, not even talking about the 4x4 layout I've been using for the last years (with O12).
(I mean, I can, but I have to scroll down to access the last row with it absurd for something called Speed-Dial ;-)) -
@netwolf There are several options to squeeze more thumbnails onto the start page:
- Reduce UI Zoom by 10% or 15% to fit more columns
- Don't show the Add button
- Hide the Titles
- Hide the navigation bar with CSS
.startpage-navigation {
display: none !important;} -
Thank you, but reducing overall UI size is not an option here due to various reasons.
The + button is way out of sight anyway (only item in the 5th row)
Columns are not the problems, I'd like more than 2,5 rows.
I stopped customizing things until a way to make changes persistent across upgrades is found as it simply got too cumbersome and frustrating for me to do the same thing over and over again, and even when I tried it I couldn't get a usable and working 4 x 4 layout without the need to scroll (even with hiding everything I can). -
@rekuzar I added this two points:
- A color picker for custom color of background
- Editable name field (thumbnail), to create your own titles
Screen suggestion:
-
Apologies if this has already been addressed, but is there currently a way to:
-
make the background of transparent icons actually transparent? For example, here's what I've had set up in firefox before:
-
Enter a url for your custom thumbnail (and even better...have that url be refreshed periodically)? In the above image, the moon and cloud icon are actually dynamically generated based on current weather conditions using a script. The image updates periodically when the weather conditions change, but the url stays the same every time.
I realize those are rather specific requests, but personally, I'd love to see them implemented if there isn't a way to do either currently.

@st_lawson The only way to get "icon-style" images like those in your screencap would be to use custom images. A PNG image with a 100% transparent background should do it. There is no way you would get an updating site icon, tho. The only updating images you could use would be ones of the whole page, essentially - not a dynamically-generated single image.

How about this: Auto convert favicon to speed-dial icon

What about more straightforward support of custom/user CSS so that whoever wants to mess with it, can do it easily?

@killchain
Hi, you can mod Vivaldi already with css/js look:https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/10549/modding-vivaldi?page=1
I reduced Speed Dial size, transparency and rows, columns.
I am sorry but I forgot who write the code, I only fit it to my needs.Laptop screen.
Cheers, mib

May I add those little suggestions:
- Make it possible to classify the different tabs of the speed dial with a drag and drop feature.
- Websites favicon as a background image as mentioned by @GBB
- Classify website in speed dial according to the click numbers, just as the emojis on Whatsapp for example. In the screenshot above, if I click more often on Google Keep than Google Photo, it'll eventually come in first position.
- Make it possible to classify the different tabs of the speed dial with a drag and drop feature.

@antoine-luboz Please vote for the existing feature requests:
-
+1 for for more customization for speeddial, accessible within vivaldi settings (without editing css/js files)!
Did not find how to do it.
The main additional feature would be a way to customize the font, because reducing the tiles reduces their font too.
A way to decrease the 'wasted' space between tiles would be nice too.
May I add the ability to leave blank spaces... -
Please make the Speed Dial remember the last used directory. See https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/24157/remember-last-active-speed-dial-folder-per-window

The latest snapshot allows users to resize speed dial thumbnails.
Default size with six columns works well for me with a 1200x1600 portrait primary monitor and a 1920x1080 landscape monitor.
There is also an option to disable drag and drop reordering of thumbnails.
