Option to Disable Autoload and Autoplay of HTML5 Videos

How is this still an issue? Vivaldi is amazing with tabs and the syncing with mobile tabs is broken af but at least it exists unlike Brave. Brave has a clear and concise option to disable autoplay, how does a browser meant for 100s of tabs not?

Yeah, I don't know. It's 2021 and we still have to deal with autoplay. Vivaldi devs don't seem to care about what the users want.
-
@spaztastical I don't know Brave, but after a brief search, according to their forum, the feature wasn't even working until few months ago and they also HAD to use autoplay stopper or other extensions, so...

@mackhax0r : that's not fair, the team is hard working adding features and fixing bugs, always. Both fixing and adding missing features take time.
-
Yeah, as a software developer - I get it. But 3 years? Firefox has this feature implemented https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/block-autoplay so there is no reason why the devs can't replicate it. I just want some kind of priority on this feature as it seems there is no priority on it right now.

Firefox has this feature
Firefox has THOUSANDS of devs, Vivaldi less than.. 30?
For the record, in this same thread I already told how this feature is not working in Firefox anyway, I tried on 9gag and all video start themselves while scrolling down the page. -
@mackhax0r With 3,723 feature requests, and a small team, those needed by few users or difficult to implement may have to wait for a long time. Wherever you see that a feature is tagged as In Progress, it may get done this year rather than next.
This one is still tagged as PIPELINE so it is not likely to happen for a while yet.

Video Autoplay on websites is the scourge of modern browsing. Last time general browsing was that annoying was before the popup blocking era.
This option/feature should not be overlooked and put aside by dev team. I'm stunned to find out that vivaldi does not already have such a feature.

I guess it's not that easy to implement, especially on YouTube. Firefox has this feature, but it doesn't work reliable
-
@stardust That's what web standard is for, html5 video audio should have such feature included as web standard right from the beginning, plus a STOP function to stop downloading/buffering like any media player ever have.
Again, I blame Evil Greedy Googloo for hijacked W3C & force this nonsense on all Internet user since the conception of html video audio web standard to maximize profit via unstoppable video ads.

@dude99
Actually, the video (and audio) API makes it possible to prevent not just autoplay, but preloading too. Google may bypass this feature somehow on YouTube, but it's part of the standard from the beginning.@Stardust
Simple extensions can do it. I reall don't see why this is such a big task to implement. -

Can u please show us such extensions? I'm not talking about extension that block HTML5 video/audio completely outright (all or nothing approach), but it can delay/block the player from loading & buffering until user click on the placeholder of the player, without the need to whitelist/blacklist certain site & reload the page.
-
@juanvase Thanks, I already know that trick. I'm looking for general html5 video audio solution for all sites.
Hopefully @Nekomajin can recommend us his extension solution.

@dude99
I use this one: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/disable-html5-autoplay-re/cafckninonjkogajnihihlnnimmkndgf?hl=enIt probably does not match your preferences, but for me, it works perfectly.
-
@nekomajin tried that, it broke YT video time display when block preloading. Then it's pointless when not blocking preloading, cuz it just keep downloading video in the background onload. Also, I remember it's will become buggy sometimes after I choose to load a video, then it forgot to block video in later new tab. LOL
I have tried most if not all such extensions & none of them really capable of fixing what big G have maliciously broke since day 1. It's not just YT, but all html5 video player on the Internet.

@dude99
I am not sure what the problem can be, because it works fine for me. -
@spaztastical It really is astounding that Vivaldi just can't do this, since it's probably one of the most important features for most people.
I've actually passed on using Brave for a very simple reason: No installation control. It's unfathomable to me to have a browser you don't even have a choice where to put it. The devs actually deleted complaints in github about it!
So, when I installed Vivaldi (and on the strength of researching before hand about the 'Standalone' option) I was thrilled to see such a well thought out installation process, including being able to opt-out of the stupid auto-updates. Such a great first impression!
Then, to see such wonderful features, Vilvadi won me over quickly. But then, not being able to natively block autoplay videos, leaves me just befuddled. Do the developers not use the same internet? I don't know who actually enjoys being bombarded with automatic playing videos on visiting any website --- or who the person is that, unwanted, has a playing video follow them as they scroll down a page. To me that's just so rude, and the proper thing would be to just stop using websites doing it, but since those websites are the Washington Post, and CNN, and my local news station, that's really not possible.
Other stupid things, like an option to use the serial port (seriously?! in my browser(!) I already have a terminal program!) don't really affect me, so for general bloat, you just try to ignore it. But you can't ignore the autoloading videos: they waste my precious, scarce bandwidth and autoplaying makes me want to hunt down the people who've put it in my face and lovingly correct their thinking with a firm clue stick.
tl;dr Please, implement a way to stop autoload and autoplay.
If we could just get the Vivaldi and Brave guys together, maybe there'd be two browsers in the world somewhat focused on privacy letting you choose where to install and not have stupid autoplay garbage!
-
@greyproc Not as easy to do as different video players have different set ups (even Safari has trouble).
-
also, i hope when the foreground and background are going to play media in the same time, vivaldi can auto-stop the background play, And i hope it can identify the suddenly, only once alert and a constant media play. As avoid of breaking experience.
