Text field in Downloads Panel for Direct Downloads
-
Like Quick Download in Opera 12. -
Its faster to create a new window and simply copy or type the address.
Maybe your use case justifies it? -
@ecli It will never be faster. How could it be?
There's an enormous memory and processing overhead to building a whole new window and its associated processes, reading the config for new tabs, drawing the tab contents, bookmarks, menus, window chrome, manipulating the session, etc., etc.
No. Just pasting a URL into a text box in the download manager would be many times faster, more efficient, and convenient.
-
This is already available in Opera 12.18. I don't often need it, but it could be useful for some workflows.

@sdgreene said in A text field in the Downloads Panel to enter URL and download directly:
There's an enormous memory and processing overhead to building a whole new window and its associated processes, reading the config for new tabs, drawing the tab contents, bookmarks, menus, window chrome, manipulating the session, etc., etc.
I was referring to the human aspect, not the programming/use of resources.
- Open download panel / add url
or - Open new tab / add url
As I said earlier maybe your use case needs it. For example to add many urls (as you wold already be in the downloads panel).
And I was curious to learn why, as I could copy some of your knowledge and implement it myself.
I apologize for the misunderstanding. - Open download panel / add url
-
@ecli My argument aside, the feature costs nothing but a sliver of screen real estate and some dev time. If I were a dev, this would be a no-brainer to include.
As for OP's use case, I have no idea, but I can imagine some use cases. Perhaps there's an image gallery that he'd like to grab a few photos from. Rather than clicking each, loading up the image in a tab, manually saving them, etc. One could (one would expect) drag the link to the Quick Download field to instantly save the image. Copy and paste would naturally work as well.
Maybe OP is reading a PDF manual, book, or even a plain text document of some sort that makes reference to other materials that can be downloaded. Drop the link in the Quick Download field.
I would expect the convenience of the Quick Download field is further maximized when the download panel remains open (or if it were in another window) so that several links could be dropped into the download queue without too much tedious repetition.

One could, of course use the Quick Commands dialogue for this. This will open a new tab, but it is then closed automatically.
-
@pesala So then there needs to be a command to initiate a download directly as well.

To me, this will make easy downloading files that Vivaldi does not download by default (by opening file URL) but opens them; e.g. PDF files, some video formats, images etc.

@rammsteinam fair enough! upvoting...

@RammsteinAM
Upvoting. For me a frequent case is downloading a large xml file which is too huge to open with Vivaldi. -

I support this, I personally do not need this but this feature has been a lifesaver for me in the past with Opera browser.
