Jón von Tetzchner: Ask me anything about Vivaldi
-
@surfinjo To my knowledge, Vivaldi makes its money to operate from "placement" agreements. Modernly, this is the only practical way for a browser company to operate at other than a net financial loss. These agreements involve things like placing default speed dial links and search engines in the browser.
In order for these agreements to be of any value whatever to their beneficiaries (advertisers), people who use these search engines and default links have to be exposed to ads. If the browser blocks ads, then the agreements are worthless. Before agreeing to such placements and paying money for them, the beneficiaries will want to know if the browser can block ads by default.
This is one consideration.
As it stands, Jon is funding the browser, its servers, domains, office premises, staff, etc. out of his own pocket. If the browser is to remain available and continue to be developed, it will have to pay for itself at some point. My understanding is, that's not yet the case. Hence, an ad blocker would be low priority. Later, when the browser is self-supporting, such things are sure to be considered.
It's not "very strange" that no one is eager to jump in and answer this subject once again, after it was discussed to death publicly in these very forums some months ago. "...the single person who did, doesn't want anyone to know." I don't know why that would be the case. However, conspiracy theorists may stop holding their collective breath.

First: I'm already logged in. Is it a page-error or a browser-error?
Second: (Same problem as Pesala et al) I'm back to the begings. I have to use two programs for the internet. Opera 12 and this webbrowser. How long should this continue?
Which one shall I use for E-Mail? Opera 12.50 or 12.16 (12.18 for MS)?
Three years ago we are promised, we will soon get a mail client in Vivaldi (M3), but it seems like promised by 'politians'- Sorry, i'm a bit disapointed.
Last: Can you please tell us, why all alternative web browsers except MS, ⸮Apple?, Google and Mozilla are terminated, or shall I say killed, -
Hmmm.. ok!
It's 2018!Yeah really ;), and I am curious about Vivaldi's future plans for Privacy (security, tracking etc...) and Performance (for this one I am not about becoming Firefox Quantum, I am all about overall stability and speed optimizations... things that we are lacking in comparison with other browsers! Would those things get higher development priority?
Next...
What about making Vivaldi even more PERSONAL? For me Vivaldi is visually attractive, customizable browser, but let's make it the best at what it is already doing good. Good, better, the best!
For those who are using Vivaldi currently and after, they will be happy with that direction.Overall... Privacy, Performance and strong plans for being more tweakable than it is today (It's my web and I want to surf it the way I want!)
Thank you.

Hello, and thank you for the opportunity to ask questions. A few of mine:
Q1: why the browser is not open source?
Q2: Any plans to open source it?
Q3: What are you plans for further development in regard the connection to Google Chrome. Currently you have positioned the browser as customizeable chrome, but do you have plans to move further from Chrome due to the multiple privacy/security questions raised by multiple users? -
-
What plans do you have to boost the Vivaldi popularity, I mean, in marketing?
-
You have any recommendation of movies or series like a "must watch"?
-
Do you intend come to Brazil to some tech event (like Campus Party) to show Vivaldi to more brazilians? I remember when you were in Opera still and the company were at the Campus Party, showing the browser, I even participated of an online campaign to promove it.

@4kai
For e-mail, if you are going to us Opera, use O12.18. M2 has had security fixes not available in previous versions. -
Q: Vivaldi has obvious links to Opera and its community. Not only due to your background, but a big part of its user base are Opera users that were looking for an alternative, especially the ones disappointed after Presto engine has been abandoned.
How do you feel about Vivaldi constantly being associated with Opera or people asking for features that they used to have in Opera like it would be natural that they show up here? Do you feel this is a good thing for Vivaldi (at least for the time being) or would you prefer to have a more separate image? -
@pesala said:
The problem is that each user has their own needs.
The problem is that some users do not know the difference between a want and a need; between a request and a demand.
Well the thing is when Vivaldi came about they made clear how important bookmarks were for them in comparisson to Opera who were hellbent in getting rid of them at the time.
Thing is: More than 2 years have passed and yes i am one of those waiting for the bookmarks bar to get at least some more features back. The bookmark panel is simply slower and more click intense if you jump a lot between folder. I do respect everyone whose use style it fits but with more clicks required to navigate it its for me definately the inferior solution.
I am constantly installing build after build always hoping something changes and it might just not make it into the changelog.
I also understand that its more fun to develop new cool stuff but my disapointment about this has risen to a point where i am about to give up on it. It was a nice dream when Jon came back with Vivaldi but thats all it is for me so far - a disapoint.
I kept my mouth shut for more than 2 years except two ocassions. The first reporting it as a bug (which was accepted at that time) and then later asking about it in a comment.
These days i am thinking about asking Jon whether he would allow donations towards an employee to get someone to work on this in his spare time and make some extra money. If some users donate towards the same feature it might get a shot even while it may be low prio in the official development where it would not see the light of day for a long time.
And yes i read that its not a simple feature but in comparisson to much other stuff in this browser its not on top list of most difficult stuff either. And after more than two years there really hasn´ t been much progress there .
I will keep on installing and hoping ... but i went from very optimistic to low expectations over the last two years.
-
@bender Well, you might like to know it's a high priority for Jon, too, but other demands on the developers' time, which simply cannot be back-burnered, keep pushing it in to the future.
-
@purgatori Speaking of whitelisting, would you or anyone here know what the exact partners and URLs Vivaldi had agreements with that I can whitelist with uBO? I'd like to at least be able to help them get some revenue, and the V team could even make a blog post about what URLs we can add to our whitelist to help them.
And I really like the idea of Opera and Chrome building in their own ad-blocker that whitelists it's own advertisers. I also like Brave's way of replacing ads with it's advertisers. As long as I can block all other ads and speed up browsing, that would be ideal.
-
@purgatori I've deleted probably most of the bookmarks that come default in Vivaldi long ago. The search engine I use is DDG, so at least I can add that!
-
@d0j0p You might try momentarily re-naming your Default folder. This will cause a spontaneous load of the current Vivaldi default Speed Dial and search engines. NOTE: It's not just the sites listed in the Speed Dial and search engines that earns Vivaldi revenue, but the actual URL that Vivaldi installs. The URL contains information in it that routes the shortcut or search engine through the provider, and notifies the provider at the same time that the traffic came from Vivaldi. Absent these specific URLs, the providers/beneficiaries of these placement agreements have no way of knowing it was Vivaldi that sent them the traffic.

@OlgaA Can You define "end of week"?
-
@rotfl: We're doing the recording on Sunday but will need some time to edit the video We should be able to post it sometime next week. Great questions, I am sure Jon is looking forward to tackling them
-
@olgaa Excited to see the video Will you be publishing it in the Blog Post, where you anounced the Asking of questsions or will there be a new one?
Kind regards - "Arno"
