Vertical Reader Mode - Vivaldi browser Snapshot 1.14.1072.3
-
Sometimes,when I right'clicked,Vivaldi lost control which always open new link in the new windows or any ohter options. Does anyone notice this??
-
@danielson -wish someone could answer.
-
@danielson UI language has to be set to a vertical font (such as Japanese or Chinese) to see it.
-
It's my mouse,nothing to do Vivaldi.

@mib2berlin Many thanks mib. As i said, my earlier attempts failed, but today i have solved it. I provide the following specifically FYI of other Manjaro, & therefore presumably other Arch-based distros. It's a copy & paste of my personal working notes, so it contains some explanatory comments as well.
19/1/18: V-SS 1.14.1072.3 (Official Build) snapshot (64-bit) comes with Chromium 64, & it transpires that c64 breaks the previous installation & storage protocol for libffmpeg, without which H.264/MP4 [hence Netflix] break. By trial & error, reading various clues from Gwen-Dragon [https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/185758 and https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/185932], diagnosing the various error messages i got [not only, but including, https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/185896], & lifting one foot off the ground whilst facing NW, i solved it.
This sequence successfully resolves c64's libffmpeg

This sequence successfully resolves c64's Widevine...

Consequently, after restarting V-SS 1.14.1072.3 (Official Build) snapshot (64-bit), now both H.264/MP4 at https://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html , & Netflix itself, play again. Yay.

@steffie
Cool, now the Discovery can fly again.Cheers, mib

@mib2berlin
Expletive expletive expletive. I piloted the solution i recently posted, in my Manjaro VM, & as i indicated it worked very nicely. I then replicated each step in Tower's real Manjaro OS. Each step completed ok with no errors. At the end, the specific new files for libffmpeg & Widevine ended up in the correct locations, & doing a sha256 hash check confirmed they are identical to the new ones in my VM. I restarted V-SS expectantly, tested for H.264/MP4 at https://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html ... & to my displeasure there is still no H.264/MP4 ... yet in the VM it's perfect. Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.POSTSCRIPT: SOLVED
I discovered after this that whereas all was good if i ran V-SS "naked" [as i was in the VM], when i instead run in Firejail as usual, H.264/MP4 & hence Netflix are broken because the new path to libffmpeg.so was being blocked by Firejail. The solution was then trivial; had to edit my /home/steffie/.config/firejail/vivaldi-snapshot.profile to append this:whitelist ~/.local/lib/vivaldi/
-- after this, all is good again. Phew.

@danielson Thanks a lot for recommending the new feature! In the current snapshot, the vertical-reading option is available when the UI language is either Chinese (Simplified/Traditional), Japanese or Korean. We're discussing whether to get rid of the restriction now.

New day, new Vivaldi launch.
Approx 150 tabs vanished into thin air - gone.
Hooray! NOT.
No option to get them back from the closed tabs recycle bin.
What's the best mitigation for the future to be prepared for such amnesia? Manually save a session every time the browser is closed? Can this be scripted? -
@rogerwilco I would imagine most of these 150 tabs are pretty much mainstay in your workflow, therefore saving as session once a week should suffice, so the loss is not as devastating. Often you can find them in your trash, if not, that's bad luck. Scripting this wouldn't be easy, messing with Vivaldi's inbuilt functions is hard. You will have to wait for Vivaldi to introduce such an option I suppose.
-
@luetage: Hi. Thanks for your reply. I went to the forum to see what other users do/did in such cases; I came across "Session Buddy" to have a "Plan B" in the future. Installed it, took a look at the options and was thinking to myself: great, you're using a 3rd party tools now to ensure the proper operation of the main tool - the browser.
Once my blood pressure was back to normal I realized that there is the Windows built-in function to restore previous versions of files and folders. Ran that on the "default" folder within my Vivaldi profile and now I'm down to the loss of around 20-ish tabs.
Don't get me wrong, I love Vivaldi. Things like this just make it a tough love at times; thankfully this has only happened once or twice before.
-
@rogerwilco Glad to hear you got most of them back -- now save them as session please ^^
-
@luetage: Hehe I did.
And with "Session Buddy" and Windows' "previous versions" on top I should be well prepared for the next hiccup until session management/handling becomes more stable; no, haven't lost confidence in this happening.And ultimately I should not be complaining as I decided to go with the snapshot versions and that's what can happen.

@blacksuan19: Nice to hear, though she is not a man. Nonetheless I am sure she appreciates your support?
I was away yesterday but have since written this https://vivaldi.com/blog/snapshots/understanding-video-issues-with-vivaldi-for-linux-snapshots/
