A little bit faster, and then it's good to go
-
Well, I understand the fact that Vivaldi has much more abilities and customization possibilities in comparison with other popular web browsers, so we should not expect superior performance with countless features on an old slow computer.
But, maybe a little bit faster startup?
Well, I agree that my device is slow enough itself, but many other web browsers are not as - that - heavy is Vivaldi...
The problem is not only the startup slowness, panel hurts too. Sluggish and not smooth...
I feel the big problems of Vivaldi are its launch speed, panel slowness and video streaming - mostly for slow computers. Anything else is not a big deal (to change someone's opinion about making Vivaldi default browser or not).
-
@claw The Dev Team tries hard to give you a better performance, also for old computers.
There are many "construction sites" of the browser to fix and enhance.Please have patience and test the Snapshots, perhaps these are a little bit faster.
-
@claw I noticed that a lot of users obsess over startup time. To me, it seems irrelevant since I only start up Vivaldi when I boot up my PC, then it stays loaded all day.
When I take a break the PC goes on Sleep, but Vivaldi is still loaded and ready to go.
Performance of loading web pages is more important as it is something one must do hundreds? of times a day.
By far the biggest time-savings come from the ability to customise the browser to suit your workflow. Whether, like me, you only ever load a few tabs, or like some users want to load 100s, the time taken to find what you want is measured in seconds or tens of seconds, not milliseconds. The speed dial, bookmarks bar, nicknames, tab-stacking, tab tiling, Quick Commands, Cheat sheet, etc., save many minutes throughout the day.
2 or 3 seconds is neither here nor there when it comes to starting the browser.
-
@gwen-dragon That's great.
Well I'm currently trying the latest snapshot - I guess it feels a bit faster now!
-
@pesala Oh, right.
But when it comes to a comparison, human mind measures even milliseconds!
I never have a lot of tabs, but I know that either way, Vivaldi is really quick about those things.
And yeah. 3 seconds won't matter. But when it comes to days, weeks and months, it will be multiplied, and sometimes we'll feel tired.
By the way, I don't + can't keep Vivaldi open all the time [hell I only got 2GBs of ram, I have so much to do too!]
-
@claw But please use Installer with Advanced as Standalone to reduce issues with your current Vivaldi Stable browser profile.

You may like to have a look on Minimem or CleanMem.

Then use the 32bit version of Vivaldi, that does use less RAM than 64bit.

Is it possible for you to add another 2Gb of RAM to your system? If you could, it would make a major difference in system performance.
-
2GB's of RAM sounds like a 15 year old computer, wait don't tell me it still has a Pentium chip too?

If is using a x64 OS on 2Gb machine, should consider to install a x86 OS, it will use lesser resources.
-
@gwen-dragon Oh I didn't even figure that out!!
Thanks for the tip (32 bit).
-
@blackbird I don't know if I can or can't - because my motherboard may not be compatible with it. However, I searched the internet and it said I can have 4GBs DDR2 Ram. I will consider upgrading it sometime next year!
-
@stpvid1 Hell it has
Well not 15's but it's about 9 years old with a slight graphic and 1 GB ram upgrade in all these years
-
@gwen-dragon And do you mean it's better for me to use stable edition?
I don't want it to be portable tho
-
@claw You may test the Stable and if it does not fit your needs then the Snapshot.
But take care: Snapshots are Beta/Testing and may have bugs and make problems.
-
You are not forced to use it as a portable version.
-
@zalex108 Yeah. And I installed the 32-bit version.
-
@gwen-dragon I'd like to use the Stable edition, but I'm still waiting for sync to arrive to Stable. And well, Snapshot also has much more!
