[Feature Request] Prevent Vivaldi from closing when closing last active tab

  • Not sure if there's a workaround for this since it happens to Opera (or Chrome?) for me as well. And it still bugs me to this day why the browser closes when you close the very last tab. When you close the last tab, it should open the speed dial rather than close the exit the whole browser.

  • I agree the current behavior is a little odd.

I would argue that the standard behavior on Mac would be to do like we do now, and close the window when you close the last tab, but to keep the Application running in the dock, so you can quickly open a new window ( with speed dial) using for example keyboard shortcut command-n.

But your suggestion should be an optional behavior available in settings.

    Do you agree?

I'm not on Mac but the option to close ("hibernate" on Mac?) or go to startpage when last tab is closed, certainly would work for me.

  • @Xypher:

When you close the last tab, it should open the speed dial rather than close the exit the whole browser.

I'd like to see this as an option.

Yes, as long as the option is there it's perfectly fine with me even if it's optional.

This will be very useful in cases such as when I'm closing all or at least multiple tabs with command+w, and with the last tab it suddenly hides the browser, which IMO breaks my workflow. Not to mention if you're going thru your notes on the sidebar. In Opera, it even disrupts active downloads (not sure with Vivaldi I haven't tried it).

Just so I could keep the browser from hiding, I would first open a new speed dial tab and close the other tab. Of course, pressing command-n kinda works, but that's just another needless effort rather than just opening a new speed dial tab when the last tab is closed.

If I want to hide the browser, I'd just press command-h or just click on the red close (x) button. It doesn't need to be the last tab.

  • Many thanks to Vivaldi team for implementing this on the latest snapshot this week!

More power to you guys! :)

I just noticed when closing the last tab, the "Speed Dial" tab name no longer displays and it's just blank. Both on my PC and Mac. Already filed using the bug wizard.

I'm really liking the Tile Tab Stack feature btw. It really improves productivity on very wide displays and resolutions, especially in a multi-monitor setup. B)

  • Wait why did you guys revert the behavior in the latest snapshot? At least make it an option… :(
