Can’t use Vivaldi forum login with Vivaldi
-
Has anyone come across this? I actually cannot use this forum (or log in to Vivaldi.net) using Vivaldi, since the last update. I’ve actually had to come in here using Firefox. This is what happens when I use Vivaldi to log in to Vivaldi:
Probably related is that I can no longer use the website at http://cantonese.sheik.co.uk either—all that website returns now is the word ‘Denied’. This happens regardless of whether I use Windows 10 or Mac OS X. My latter Mac OS X set-up only has one extension on it, though I may try it without any extensions to see if it makes a difference.
I have filed bug reports for both but I would be interested to hear other users’ feedback.
One noticeable bug I filed earlier has now been fixed, so I am confident this is being looked into. But of all the sites you would think I could use, it would be Vivaldi’s own one.

@jackyan I wonder if it has anything to do with your cookie blocking experiments?
-
@jackyan The cantonese.sheik website works fine here (US) with Vivaldi 1.13.1008.32 Stable 64. Likewise, I have no problem logging into either this forum or Vivaldi.net. If I attempt to access the https://login.vivaldi.net/commonauth page that generated your 403 message, I get auto-redirected to https://login.vivaldi.net/authenticationendpoint/retry.do which carries the following message:
Authentication Error!
Something went wrong during the authentication process. Please try signing in again.Since Vivaldi's various log-ins are highly cookie-dependent, both for their presence and their content, what @Pesala noted may be quite relevant.

@pesala @blackbird Hi Pesala and Blackbird, thank you both. I looked into the existing cookies, but clearing just the Vivaldi and Sheik cookies made no change. I’ll look into removing all blocks and report back. Vivaldi’s definitely not blocked (because there would be no reason to do that).
The thing is, the very same cookies are blocked in this Firefox browser (in fact, that’s where I got the list from) and I can get in here.
My Mac OS X Vivaldi has no cookies blocked—it’s a reasonably fresh installation—but I still cannot access cantonese.sheik.co.uk without changing to Firefox.
Blackbird, interestingly, when I log in on Mac OS X (I just come here via the log-in button in forum.vivaldi.net), I am taken to https://login.vivaldi.net/authenticationendpoint/login.do, but in Windows, I am taken to https://login.vivaldi.net/authenticationendpoint/login.do?client_id=TOrKO97sJOni1AfNXpjf2WnkAG8a&commonAuthCallerPath=%2Foauth2%2Fauthorize&forceAuth=false&originUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fforum.vivaldi.net%2F&passiveAuth=false&redirect_uri=https%3A%2F%2Fforum.vivaldi.net%2Fauth%2Fvivaldi%2Fcallback&response_type=code&scope=openid&tenantDomain=carbon.super&sessionDataKey=74145891-c464-4e41-83fa-823359eb98d7&relyingParty=TOrKO97sJOni1AfNXpjf2WnkAG8a&type=oidc&sp=forum.vivaldi.net&isSaaSApp=false&authenticators=BasicAuthenticator:LOCAL . I wonder if there’s a clue in there.
I’ll come back after removing the cookie blocks. Thanks again!

@blackbird @Pesala Just one little postscript before the deletion: it doesn’t appear I am blocking anything that Vivaldi would rely on.
BRB …
-
Looks like the cookie-blocking isn’t the reason. I have a feeling it’s something to do with either the browser or this site, though that doesn’t explain the cantonese.sheik.co.uk site (still returning ‘Denied’).
I am on v. 1.13.1008.32 (Stable channel) (32-bit) but running a 64-bit machine. What I could do is hunt for a 64-bit version, @Blackbird, as I wonder if that would make a difference. I’ve only wound up with 32-bit because that’s what the site presented when I came to download Vivaldi.

Use an user agent switcher extension, change to chrome, tadah! no more denied.
they're just doing something wrong when "identifying" the browser in use. -
Sorry for all the posts, I’m updating as I discover things. Looks like 1.13 is the culprit as far as cantonese.sheik.co.uk is concerned. I’ve just downgraded to 1.12 without removing browsing data and the site is accessible again. Something in 1.13 is causing the site to block it.
The forum remains inaccessible but I am now taken to https://login.vivaldi.net/commonauth instead of the URL with the huge string at the end. Again, it does appear 1.13 is causing sites to respond differently.
-
@ian-coog Thank you, let me try that out!
-
@iAN-CooG Sure enough, Ian, that did the trick for this forum—thank you!
I changed the user agent to Chrome 60:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/60.0.3112.78 Safari/537.36
And I am now typing this in Vivaldi!
Now, I wonder what of the old user-agent confused this forum.
-
@gwen-dragon Thanks, Gwen, but I’m afraid I cannot get in without changing the user agent in Vivaldi for Windows. I actually had to switch to Firefox just to log in here until @iAN-CooG posted his suggestion.
I have a Chrome plug-in called Modify Headers in Google Chrome, where I alter the IP address for testing some of our websites. However, I never program in any user-agent change in that (till now). Something in this forum is preventing me from logging in when I don’t change the user-agent when using Vivaldi 1.12 and 1.13 for Windows (Mac OS X is fine).

@jackyan said in Can’t use Vivaldi forum login with Vivaldi:

You haven't said that before. I suggested to change user agent for the cantonese.sheik.co.uk site, not for vivaldi.net, which is perfectly accessible from Vivaldi itself, it would be really strange otherwise, don't you think?
Disable ALL your extensions, restart vivaldi if necessary and retry. Something on your installation is interfering. -
Here’s a thing.
I put the blocked cookies back in while on 1.12, everything was still OK.
I’ve just gone to 1.13.1008.32 (Stable channel) (64-bit). Guess what? Cantonese.sheik.co.uk returns ‘Denied’ again—until I used @iAN-CooG’s suggestion on that site, too. Now that site works as well.
Vivaldi 1.13 definitely has something in its new user-agent that is causing big problems, with both this forum and with cantonese.sheik.co.uk.
-
@ian-coog It would be strange, but the fact is your suggestion worked for both sites.
Once I downgraded to 1.12 the Cantonese site was fine …
The extension wasn’t switched on when I made the original post (though I have tested it and it made no difference to that site when on Vivaldi 1.12; it’s only 1.13 when a user-agent change proved necessary). I have Vivaldi 1.13 on Mac OS X with no extensions and that site is inaccessible.
I’ll follow your advice on disabling extensions and report back regarding this site.
-
@ian-coog Looks like that did it! Disabled and then re-enabled extensions and this forum was accessible again. Thank you—your user-agent method does work for the other site though so I’ll remember to turn it on when I visit there.
-
PS.: Any thoughts why v. 1.13 would require a user-agent header modification to visit a website when 1.12 didn’t?
-
bad user agent detection, new version in new user agent make their detection go to the "unknown browser" branch of their lame "if then else" code
If you haven't noticed yet, Vivaldi UA is the same as Chrome with added at end "Vivaldi/1.94.1008.32", this added text make all these badly coded sites go spaz. -
@gwen-dragon @iAN-CooG Thank you, Gwen and Ian, looks like you’ve solved the mystery!
I’ll alert the cantonese.sheik.co.uk dev about this. His email bounced yesterday but I’ll raise it on their forums.
