Idiot Compassion

Parents and grandparents who are too kind to children spoil their character. Doing whatever one wants, and being given everything that one asks for, is not the way for children to learn and grow up. They should be taught the values of contentment, gratitude, respect, and frugality from a young age. As my mother once said, when I asked for another apple: “Apples don’t grow on trees.” Well, we know that what she meant was: “The money to buy apples does not grow on trees.”
The current generation of computer and Internet users expect everything to be tailored to suit their demands. Software developers cannot possibly satisfy everyone. Even free software or nearly free software is not good enough for them. If something is not to their liking, instead of simply requesting improvements, or asking for temporary solutions, they make demands such as: “This software is unusable, until this feature is added, I will go back to using my old software.” Of course, such threats are empty. If their old software was perfect, why are they trying out something else?
The problem lies between the keyboard and the chair. Negativity breeds dissatisfaction, and obstructs the learning process.
Complaining Rewires Your Brain for Negativity
Repeated complaining rewires your brain to make future complaining more likely. Over time, you find it’s easier to be negative than to be positive, regardless of what’s happening around you. Complaining becomes your default behavior, which changes how people perceive you.
And here’s the kicker: complaining damages other areas of your brain as well. Research from Stanford University has shown that complaining shrinks the hippocampus — an area of the brain that’s critical to problem solving and intelligent thought. Damage to the hippocampus is scary, especially when you consider that it’s one of the primary brain areas destroyed by Alzheimer’s. (Travis Bradberry)

This post is too long. I will not read it unless you make it shorter. Do something about it.

Very good text!
Incredible this part! The problem lies between the keyboard and the chair. Negativity breeds dissatisfaction, and obstructs the learning process.

@luetage It's only 305 words. I'll leave it the way it is, thanks.

@pesala People complained about twitter increasing the length of tweets from 140 to 280. This post is nearly 2000 characters long! How can you expect people in this day and age to read all that :p

@lonm You're such a nerd, you counted each and every character. Get a life!!!!

Some nerd requested a word count for Notes.

Note Word Count Summary
It might be useful for text edit boxes too.

Parents Should Limit Screen Time for their Kids
Lack of fresh air, sunlight, and exercise are really bad for developing youngsters. Not good for us old fogies either, but even worse for kids. I remember walking through a foot of snow to get to primary school in 1963 at the age of 10. In the playground the kids made slides on the ice to see who could slide the farthest. Now they close schools in bad weather because the schools are afraid of getting sued if kids get injured.
There are too many snowflakes nowadays.

There are several major features in Vivaldi that are not yet fully polished — Bookmarks Bar, Speed Dial, Search With, Mouse Gestures, Sync, etc.
Some users only see what is missing, while I only see what is available. Have you noticed, for example, that if you right-click on a bookmark in a Bookmark Bar folder, instead of getting the expected context menu, the bookmark opens in a new tab?
Some users see this only as a bug, but maybe they missed that this is a feature. Left-click opens the bookmark in the current tab, while right-click opens it in a new tab.
Sure, it might be better if it worked as most users expect, to show a context menu, but Opera 12.18 is worse. Both LMB and RMB open the bookmark in the same tab.
-
An angry person is unable to read or think clearly. He or she reacts based on previous prejudice, without thinking very much at all.
The unpolished Bookmarks Bar is still causing anguish for some users. Vivaldi 1.15 added the Bookmarks Menu, and in the process added an "Add Active Tab" item to the top of the Bookmarks Bar folder menus.
- The Bookmarks Menu can be opened with Alt+B, B to show a cascading menu of all of your bookmarks.
- The Bookmarks Bar can be assigned to any folder, so you could assign a subset of your most common bookmarks to the Bookmarks Bar.
- Adding bookmarks to any folder or subfolder of your Bookmarks Bar is as easy as a Click followed by the A access key shortcut, or by clicking on "Add Active Tab" at the top of the folder or subfolder.
- The sort order of the Bookmarks Bar can be changed by right-clicking on the Bookmarks Bar. Choose from: Manually, Title, Address, Nickname, Description, or Date Created.
- Access keys can be assigned to individual bookmarks by typing an & in front of the desired letter. For example: if you have two bookmarks with the same initial letter and therefore the same access key, you can rename one in the Bookmarks Panel to assign a different key. So Snapshots and Settings will still use S, while Sync Internals will now use I as its access key. Obviously, this is only worthwhile for users who don't constantly add and delete bookmarks.
With only a little patience, one can soon regain quick access to one's favourite bookmarks. Further improvements and customisation will, no doubt, come in time.

Good article, and yes, sometimes people want to be served all done.
Since I use computers (with a Comodore 64) I have always seen it as a tool that serves my purposes and I still see it to this day. For this purpose, a free on-or offline application (sometimes better than a commercial one) is enough for me.
Vivaldi is a good example of that. Sometimes it seems to me that people do not appreciate the work of the developers who invest in this great browser, when they ask for little less than making them coffee for breakfast and reporting small deficiencies, often due to some extension or that can not open any video of an exotic format. I use Vivaldi practically from its beginnings, even with many dead birds in its first version, and that for more than a year I have not seen again, despite an intensive use of between 500-1000 pages that I visit daily, as well as other failures reported in this forum that I mostly can not reproduce. -
@luetage Little late to the party, but hilarious reply!

I have since added an article to my blog the the Six Kinds of Speech Used by the Buddha and added a full translation of the Abhayarājakumāra Sutta to which it refers.
The Buddha was completely free from anger and ill-will, nevertheless, he sometimes used speech that was harsh and displeasing to some if it was beneficial, either to them, or to others.
The Soṇa Sutta is another example where what he said would have been extremely displeasing to some (the Brahmins, who regarded themselves as superior to others on account of their lineage), while it would have pleased those who appreciate that it is good conduct, and wise speech, that make someone noble, and coming from a noble lineage has nothing to do with it.

Jo Brand's Joke Censored by the BBC.
In the episode, Brand told presenter Victoria Coren Mitchell that people who attacked Mr Farage and far-right political figures with milkshakes were "pathetic".
She said: "Why bother with a milkshake when you could get some battery acid?," adding, "I'm not going to do it, it's purely a fantasy."Some people have apparently had a humourectomy.
Edit: I should have posted this The Right to Cause Offence

@Pesala It's a very bad taste joke, and that's why some things are funny - as evidenced by the fact lots of people laughed at the joke. If it was inciting violence, people wouldn't have laughed. If anything they would have cheered or something. The whole thing is being blown out of proportion.

Climate change protester gets what she did not expect, and Green Peace accuses MP Field of assault.
It was not a public event, but a private dinner party that the protesters gate-crashed.
Unless someone is obviously armed and an immediate threat, they do not deserve to be punched or kicked, but if you do not know whether an intruder is intent on using violence, it is not unreasonable to use force to expel them.

Anyone else fed up with spoiled idiots who whine constantly about free software that is not quite perfect?

Is there a perfect software, free or paid? It is always relative
