@andrewz1986 the search bar is optional, you can search also in address bar anyway and if it does feel as superfluous for you, just disable the search bar in settings. Everyone can customize Vivaldi to their liking this way. I've set 2 different default search engines for address bar and search bar, that's why I keep them both active.

@jon Save last three sessions was already added by Dude some time back. Users can vote for it here:

Auto save last session should increase up to 3 session or MORE

I was a Firefox user since beta and never moved from it, especially because of the TreeStyleTab addon (can't live without vertical tabs...I never understood why all browsers, except Vivaldi, have tabs on the top, with wide screens and mainly vertical web sites...).
I've already tried Vivaldi before but went back to Firefox because I was missing some other addons (mainly KeeFox, for KeePass link, Chrome alternative wasn't accurate enough for credential matching).
With FF moving to Webextensions, those addons has been converted and...became available for Chrome and Vivaldi ! But TreeStyleTab WE version is really limited compared to the old version so...I moved to Vivaldi for good (thanks Mozilla, you made my move from Firefox easier !)
The only things I'm missing comes from TreeStyleTab:
- Pinned tabs being displayed as a single icons horizontal bar in vertical tabs layout (https://forum.vivaldi.net/uploads/files/1483692074793-treestyletab-pinned.png - looking google image to find an example led me to...Vivaldi Feature Resquests forum xD)
- Tree tabs display: Tabs stacking is really close but not fast enough to use. Maybe the ability to open links in the stack and to "unfold" the stack to view it's content instead of rolling through it would be enough. Tree tabs display is a very powerful feature, but 2 levels are clearly enough to avoid tons of useless open tabs.
-
Some way to hide the title bar in vertical tabs layout would also be nice. I love saving pixels ;o)
-
@porecreat Welcome! Have you tried the Window panel, coming in 1.13?
-
@jon: Thanks ! I just gave it a try and I have to admit it looks very close to TreeStyleTab, but it is more like a tab management tool than a actual tabs layout:
- You have to double click tabs to open them, more like a bookmarks list feeling
- Pinned tabs are in a "pinned tabs" folder, they're not in a compact quick access we're expecting for pinned tabs
- The real tab bar is displayed too, making all tabs be displayed twice
- It's not displayed when using another panel
I really think the current vertical tabs layout is really nice and wouldn't need much changes to be perfect: a compact/horizontal list of pinned tabs, an unfold icon on tab stacks with a small offset on the left when unfolded, and, not the most important, a hidden title bar to save more vertical space.

@ian-coog: I would rather have other buttons there like app menu or downloads list. Why waste space in such prominent area?
-
@andrewz1986 As @iAN-CooG said, you can disable the search field in settings. The Vivaldi menu can probably be moved there, but this is only possible with a custom modification to the browser: https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/10549/modding-vivaldi/
-
@andrewz1986 I have plenty of free space there, even on my 1200 x 1600 portrait monitor. I have only one extension installed and the button for that is hidden.
Still, I don't find the search field useful at all. I can easily search from the URL field with a search engine nickname followed by the search string. Or, I use the Search with menu from selected text.
On Opera 12.18, most of the toolbar is taken by buttons to tile tabs, read mail, settings, launching my favourite programs, fit to width, and view image settings. An important feature request for me and at least 30 others is the ability to customise the toolbars.
Customize Toolbars

I've been using Firefox almost exclusively since Opera switched to Blink, and I really think it is a great browser, and that v57 is a huge improvement on many levels... but the loss of so many great and useful extensions make me hesitate to now use Vivaldi.
If only the Mouse Gestures were a little bit more complete and customizable (for ex. in old Opera and FF with FireGestures, I always set up gesture - bottom then right - to close the current tab and switch to the next on the right)... -
@goustifruit: and its counterpart, bottom and left to close current tab and switch to the previous on the left.

in old Opera and FF with FireGesture
Exactly, with an extension, not natively. Also those browsers need a 3rd party extension to make more complex tasks like you described, Vivaldi already provides mouse gestures, which firefox doesn't. By setting up correctly Vivaldi mouse gestures, you actually can close a tab with down+right gesture and also activate next tab to the right by settings "activate right in tab order" in tab settings. Isn't exactly what you need?
-
@porecreat You can make single click work. That is just a setting. You can also hide the tab bar. However, you are right that it does not work with other panels. Only one at a time. If that and the pinned tabs folder does not do it for you, I suggest you make a feature request in our bug tracking system. We are always looking at improving!
Best,
Jon. -
@pesala That is, indeed, high on our list.
-
@pesala: Very good point, Pesala. Things from status bar could well move next to address bar while height of the page area would not be affected.
-
@ian-coog No, I need two different gestures, one to close the current tab and switch to the next, one to close the current tab and switch to the previous; which is not possible for now AFAIK. Old Opera was great in that regard as it was possible to set several actions in sequence for each gesture. FireGestures on Firefox was also excellent as you could associate a script with a gesture.
I had something like this to close the current tab and switch to the previous one:
var tab = gBrowser.mCurrentTab;
var lastTabIndex = gBrowser.mTabContainer.childNodes.length - 1;
if(tab.previousSibling)
gBrowser.mTabContainer.selectedIndex--;
else if(lastTabIndex > 0)
gBrowser.mTabContainer.selectedIndex = lastTabIndex;
gBrowser.removeTab(tab);And like that to close the current tab and switch to the next one:
var tab = gBrowser.mCurrentTab;
if(tab.nextSibling)
gBrowser.mTabContainer.selectedIndex++
else
gBrowser.mTabContainer.selectedIndex = 0;
gBrowser.removeTab(tab); -

I need lots of things myself too, for now I can live with what it's offered.
FireGestures on Firefox
Again, I want to stress enough on this, it's a 3rd party extension doing such complex things, or do you know some browser that implements such scripting natively? I wish too Vivaldi team could provide this and many more features, but as of now, seems a non trivial thing to add. More customizations will come in future hopefully, for now maybe post or vote existing feature requests in the thread https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/20968/feature-requests-for-1-13/
-
@ian-coog There's already a load of feature requests for gestures.
Search for the one you want and upvote it.

@goustifruit Scripting is part of our TODO list. We will get there, but our list is long.
-
@pesala Feature Request works only for the nearest release. I like Vivaldi, but I am not so fanatic to fight for these features from release to release.
