In page search (Ctrl + F) error
-
The problem has been occurring for me too for a long time (I'm using "stable" on Linux, but I used Windows 7 as well). Like @jesus2099 , I can't determine the circumstances. A related bug might help: If the Developer Tool is open, you can't use Search in Page (Ctrl-F), but I think that is the case with Chrome.
Could it be that synchronization causing this? Is it possible that something is changing by Search in Page while data is being synchronized? I know it has nothing to do with reality, but an example: Vivaldi stores what I typed in Search in Page entry and syncs it. But if I modify this text exactly when the synchronization is in progress, it is possible that this will cause an error.

Vivaldi has freezed again due to Ctrl-F. While the "Close the program?" message is shown by the system (Linux), I could discover the issue because the process is still running and I know the PID. Do you have any idea where to look for signs, information?
/var/proc
,/var/log
, etc? -
I wonder if creating a process dump, for instance through Task Manager, would in any way help the developers? If so how to make it available to them, unless one has a specific VB reported.
With the right tools to analyse a dump, they might find out what is causing it.
The biggest problem at the moment is finding a consistent way to reproduce, it just seems to happen randomly.
Actually I've not had any freeze on the latest 2.8 Snap, but it wouldn't surprise me if it pops up again.

Here's a screencast: https://i.imgur.com/KBn2Axa.mp4
Errors I think may be related (these are exists on "stable" 2.7.1628.30 64bit):
- When Developer Tools is open, you cannot start the search by pressing Ctrl-F, it only works from the menu
- If "Pause script execution" is turned on in the Developer Tools "Sources" tab (while inspecting a regular website), the Developer Tool itself and the site cannot be used, it will not respond to clicks unless I press F8
Since screencast also shows that the program is actually running (the cursor is blinking), I suspect that this "Pause script execution" (of the main Vivaldi window) is triggered for some reason and this causing to freeze the process.
Now I am starting Vivaldi from a terminal (
vivaldi --debug-packed-apps --silent-debugger-extension-api
) to see if there is a message that can help debugging. -
Just happened to me. Using 2.7.1628.30
Normally I only use it for a few seconds to find something then close it and haven't had it occur for some time. This time it was left open for a while. Not sure whether that has any bearing on it.

I got this error too on a "vanilla" profile: the search box was open for a long time, and I also switched tabs. Some characters were already entered, so the point is not to type the first character, but to change its text (
change
event?).This is how I started Vivaldi:
# Made it "vanilla" $ mv ~/.config/vivaldi ~/.config/vivaldi-my-profile # Let me open Vivaldi's Developer Tools by right clicking on the GUI $ vivaldi --debug-packed-apps --silent-debugger-extension-api
I didn't set any settings, no sync.
I opened Vivaldi Developer Tools to see the Console and also watched the terminal where I started the program. It didn't write a message in any of the places, though it may have written to Console, but I couldn't see it because of the freeze (it would freeze before than writing the message).

Cannot open "Search in Page" while Developer Tools is opened
I have new experiences with one of the errors mentioned above:
- Open Developer Tools
- Click on the web page and press
Ctrl-F
- The search box will not open
But if you do:
- Open Developer Tools
- Press
Ctrl-F
on another tab to open the search engine - Go back to the previous tab and click on the web page, press
Ctrl-F
- The search box opens
If you close it and want to open the search box again, you will not be able to open, you have to open on another tab first again.
UPDATE
Opened: (VB-56841) Cannot open "Search in Page" while Developer Tools is opened
-
The error came again.
It didn't write anything abnormal in the terminal, the Vivaldi Developer Tools "Sources" tab does not show anything special (I thought "Pause script execution" would be enabled).
However, there is one very strange thing: when Vivaldi is frozen and I want to open Dolphin (KDE's default file manager), it opens very slowly and works as if it were frozen. As soon as I close Vivaldi, it works just fine. I also tried Nautilus (GNOME File), it worked without problems.
I don't think there is a problem with KDE because, as I mentioned, the Search in Page problem also occurred in Windows.
I think we need to look for relationships:
@jesus2099 , @7twenty , @brezanac
- Are you a web developer?
- Do you use Developer Tools?
- Do you use Vagrant? (for me it almost always runs, so it coul run when the bug appeared)
- Is there a server running on localhost? (Node WebServer or anything specific that might interfere with ports)
EDIT
Forgot to answer my own questions.
- Are you a web developer? Yes
- Do you use Developer Tools? Yes
- Do you use Vagrant? Yes
- Is there a server running on localhost? Yes
Kubuntu Linux 18.04.3 LTS

The question is not whether DevTools is open when you want to search the site, but whether you use it at all. In my opinion, the error only occurs after you have opened DevTools at least once.
If possible, please try to see if you have used DevTools before freezing.

Yes, i do poke around in there on occasion. So more than likely it was opened at some stage.
-
I've found I can consistently reproduce it in the last snapshot (2.8.1650.3, Win10 x64), by just:
- Opening and closing DevTools
- Doing a Ctrl+F for a single character
- Searching a bit forward (F3)
- Then going back (Shift+F3) until it's supposed to roll around.
- Hang.
This does not happen if DevTools was not opened.

Bingo!!
Tried it 3 times and it crashed every single time after DevTools was opened/closed.
So i guess the dev's should know where to start looking now...

@Gwen-Dragon Reported as VB-56907. I will also attach a dump from the hanging process.

@Gwen-Dragon said in In page search (Ctrl + F) error:
Was the Developer Tools in attached or undocked mode?
Attached - docked on bottom.
How do you get this? Mostly a hanging process does not write a crashdump.
You can right-click the hanging process in Task Manager and create a dump which will be written to temp.
Not sure if they can use it, I hope so. -
Great catch! I can reproduce the bug too.
Maybe what I said earlier was a special case ("...when Vivaldi is frozen and I want to open Dolphin (KDE's default file manager), it opens very slowly and works as if it were frozen..."), but now this side effect is not present. I think either there are several bugs and they are linked (memory leak + bug of searching -> Vivaldi freeze + Dolphin freeze), or the situation is that when the bug "spontaneously occurs", it causes other side effects (memory leak -> bug of searching + Vivaldi freeze + Dolphin freeze).

I can reproduce even with floating dev tools open, shift f3 when it's on "1 of xx" and it will hang instead of wrapping to "xx to xx". Let's hope this is it.

I most certainly did use devtools before each freeze because I use it everyday.
But I cannot reproduce bug this way above on my 2.6.1566.49 (Stable channel) (64 bits).
I am usually in undocked mode but I also tried dock at the bottom. No freezes.
But I do have random freezes every so and then.
I would rather not update as I notice this version is slightly less often freezing than previous and maybe less than successors. As I am not sure, I don't update unless necessary for some other confirmed bug fix.How did you open devtools?
I tried both my usual CTRL+SHIFT+J and also CTRL+SHIFT+i.
And I used mouse click to close. And then tried ALT+F4 also. -
@nucasspro I am also having this problem. It occurs when I get to the bottom of the page.
For example, if I am searching for a certain word and there are multiple instances of the word. When I get to the last instance of the word, Vivaldi crashes.
-
It seems to occur regardless of how DevTools is opened: I've tried the opening methods you wrote; in all cases the error came.
I am still using 2.7.1628.30 to provide additional information about the bug until it's fixed.
