Sync Your Files without Trusting the Cloud

  • The company behind the Bittorrent protocol is working on software that can replicate most features of file-synching services without handing your data to cloud servers. A beta version is available from http://www.bittorrent.com/sync if you are interested.

  • Interesting. There have been developed decentralised cloud-less alternatives to most every activity, often before the centralised clouds, however so far the centralised solutions have won every time. It is much simpler, and much quicker, to develop for your own server park than build protocols and infrastructure for cooperative solutions in a heterogeneous environment.

  • I have tried this solution because I want to be self contained.
It may be my setup or lack of knowledge but I didn't find it that reliable. If you decide to try it, I would be careful until it proves reliable.

I made an obvious discovery. The syncing machines need to be on.
I always shut machines off when not in use so rarely can they sync.
    This is obvious now.
