H.264 not working in Vivaldi on Ubuntu 16.04



  • Video playback H.264/MP4 is not working. I tried this: https://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html and this (https://www.youtube.com/html5) to confirm.

    To solve the problem, I mainly tried this command:
    sudo apt update && sudo apt install oxideqt-codecs-extra

    Without success.

    Vivaldi 1.10 and 1.11 works for me on Ubuntu 17 with oxideqt-codecs-extra:amd64 1.21.5-0ubuntu1.

    But the video H264 should work with installed oxideqt-codecs-extra.
    On my VM without any hardware acceleration the videos with H.264 work.

    Does any video work on https://demo.castlabs.com?



  • No, I don't think they do. No error message whatsoever. In Chromium, they immediately play.

    @ekevu Chromium uses its own implementation and license payment for non-free video codecs. Vivaldi uses the oxideqt-codecs-extra to get rid of payments for users.

    • Which CPU and GPUs do you have on your mainboard?
    • Which version of Vivaldi do you use?
    • Which version of oxideqt-codecs-extra do you use?
    • What happens with video playing if you start Vivaldi in shell with:
      vivaldi --disable-gpu
    • What with
      vivaldi --gnore-gpu-blacklist

  • My advise would be to dump Ubuntu as it's not that great and Canonical are too connected with Windows these days. I would advise you to move over to Manjaro KDE 17.02 and then install Vivaldi from the Aur using the Makepkg from the snapshot then follow that same with the codec from the aur packages. The videos will all work perfectly this way and the same with Opera if you use the Opera version too. Test the browser ability by using this link to see if video accepted:

    Once you see connections with Microsoft then head for the hills as Microsoft is attempting INFILTRATION believe me.

    Let me think about that ... no. I could dump the browser, if necessary, but I do like Vivaldi.
