Fake deaf interpreter at Mandela's funeral

  • Wow. This shouldn't be funny, but I can't help laughing. This guy pretended to be a deaf interpreter and just waved his hands around and got away with it. That took balls to stand up there and do that, knowing you're just making it up.

  • Wonder who he is and how he bypassed security. But yeah… laughed when I saw that :-D

  • I once heard that there was a trial here in the UK involving a German witness who could not speak English. For some reason the scheduled translator couldn't make it in time so an appeal for another was put out among the courts & a volunteer was found.

The first question for any witness in a trial is to confirm their name.

The volunteer translator calmly approached the witness & then screamed, "VOT IS YOUR NAME!" in his best stereotypical Gestapo officer voice.

I'm sure it's an urban legend but I'd like it to true!

Sounds too funny to be true :side:

  • I found that, frankly, not so funny. One should consider the occasion. It was a celebration in honor of a great man: Nelson Mandela!
To make a joke of it I find despicable!

  • I don't think anyone disagrees that it is tasteless. I'm well aware that my sense of humour is pretty twisted.

They should have hired Holly Maniatty.

  • It was funny watching that clown.

In his defence, he appeared stressed out. There he is; in front of the world; representing his country; speaking for world leaders. I think he became overwhelmed; panicked; went blank; and winged it.

I really feel sorry for South Africa. They were so embarrassed.

  • From Mandela signer faced murder rap in 2003:

… According to South African news network eNCA, Thamsanqa Jantjie has “faced rape (1994), theft (1995), housebreaking (1997), malicious damage to property (1998), murder, attempted murder and kidnapping (2003) charges.”

Despite his record, the station said it was not clear whether Jantjie has ever served time in prison, as “many of the charges brought against him were dropped, allegedly because he was mentally unfit to stand trial. ...

Apparently the gentleman has a history of some mental problems. The big security question is how someone with his history of violence and instability could ever get onto a platform within a couple of feet of a gaggle of world leaders.

… Government officials have tried to track down the company that provided Thamsanqa Jantjie but the owners “have vanished into thin air,” said Deputy Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu. ...

  • Well, the prison where I work once hired a fake doctor…

Sometimes it's hard to distinguish between incompetence and corruption!!

  • Thats not a "South Africa problem". Here in Germany Gert Postel is a known case. And i´m sure there are much more all around the world.
