Do NOT run Vivaldi.1.10.856.16.exe !!! Serious bug! Installer damages registry!

  • Win 7.
    former: 1.10.845.3 (32-bit) Standalone.

After 1.10.856.16 was installed, I found some of my apps lost their settings totally!
I checked the registry and yes! Under HKCU\Software, initials from 0(?) to L(?), e.g. 7-Zip, ComodoGroup, KatMouse, ... these entries had been deleted!

Then I added an entry under HKCU\Software\ and ran the installer (Vivaldi.1.10.856.16.exe) again. Proved! The added entry was deleted!

Then I ran the installer (Vivaldi.1.10.856.16.exe) in Comodo's sandbox. After that I opened the sandboxed vivaldi_installer.log and saw a line:
[...:ERROR:install_util.cc(316)] Failed to delete registry key: Software\ error: 5
Proved again! This time the installer was in the sandbox so it failed.

Then I tested on the former installer (Vivaldi.1.10.845.3.exe). No such an issue!

Please confirm this and tell me the reason!
Please don't let it happen again!

I'm using standalone version. Should it touch so much of my registry???
Though it is Beta version, Should it make so big losses???

I always ran the installer to build the standalone version, because I trust Vivaldi.
But next time I'm going to bother myself to decompress the installer...

  • Dang, that's it. I didn't know what could have caused it but now that I read this, I have to confirm that after installing 1.10.856.16 at work over 1.10.845.3 using the full installer, I also lost ALL the content of this regkey (at least)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Far

which is Far Manager configurations, user menus etc. Luckily I could recover a rather old saved .reg from both my PCs so I restored almost (~80% estimated) all its settings.

On the home PC I updated with the delta autoupdate and nothing strange have happened.

  • Here is also my vivaldi_installer.log

[0529/143226.793:ERROR:install_util.cc(316)] Failed to delete registry key: Software\ error: 5

    Reported.

  • @vias Thanks and I also can confirm. I beleive it will be fixed very soon.

  • Oh, now i knoe why some of my programs misbehaved after installing a 1.10 version on Windows 10.

    Thanks for report! :hand_splayed:
Bug VB-28959 "Win32 Full Installer v1.10.856.16 destroys HKCU\Software reg keys"
was confirmed by others internally and it got Prio 1!

@Gwen-Dragon Aha. I, too, have had programs that were fully installed, supposed to start and log in on machine start, act as though they were not fully installed, and wanted me to log in and "finish" installing them every time I powered up the box. It had not occurred to me that Vivaldi would have anything to do with it. I thought it was caused by a Win10 update. I even had a default mail program get unregistered as default. Oops.

  • The bug with Windows installer seems to be fixed now in today's internal 1.10.
I hope the next days there will come a 1.10 Snapshot update for you.

Yes. We're lucky that's the way, what I assume is the large majority, of people got the snapshot.

This snapshot is still allowed to download...
They don't mind the potential losses of more users at all!

Let me complain once more, since the coming fix can not redeem my losses...
The infos of (bookmarks + last positions) for more than 60 files kept by a text editor...
Especially, I customized an app to keep 3000 text clips. But the default setting is 1000. And I ran it just after the covert disaster...

Later after reboot I found even some system settings had been deleted:
The current theme (Unsaved) is reset.
Language Bar (once docked in taskbar) is floating again.
    Anybody know why?

Anybody know why the vacuum stopped before HKCU\Software\M* ? (Thanks, Vivaldi... But I prefer BSOD to this...)

    HKCU\Software\Clients\Mail
    I think.

    My Thunderbird also prompted...

  • It's withdrawn from the downloads now

  • @iAN-CooG
But the URLs are still alive: (The files are binary same.)
    httXX://downloads.vivaldi.com/snapshot/Vivaldi.1.10.856.16.exe
    httXX://downloads.vivaldi.com/snapshot/Vivaldi.1.10.856.16.x64.exe

They don't know that these links has been included in RSS etc. and/or reposted everywhere?
And no new RSS yet so far...

    @Gwen-Dragon
    @Vivaldi-Team

  • @vias Oh, yes, that is a serious problem. Thanks.
I pinged the webadmin and webdevs some minutes ago to block the URLs.

  • @vias Now they are blocked and purged from CDN servers.

  • Superb detective work, @vias ! This seems to be a wake up call to Vivaldi regarding the broad handling of critical bugs. But even more, I am astounded that MS allows programs this kind of broad access to the registry. This means that any installer can not only delete, it can silently read and report back registry contents.

  • @Gwen-Dragon

Now, the new snapshot is abnormal:
    https://downloads.vivaldi.com/snapshot/Vivaldi.1.10.862.6.exe

    Only 6.82 MB.
    No icon.
    Can not be decompressed.
Can not be run in sandbox.

    Someone is joking.

    Not for me. 39.7 MB.
Looks like download from CDN is broken from your internet provider.

But please open a new thread for the download problem.

  • Installer of current 1.10.862.6 works now.
