Multiple user profiles

  • I wanted to test some functions in V without all the extensions I have installed. I didn't see any kind of Safe Mode, so the next option was to create a virgin user profile and open in it.

I had no idea it is so complicated. There was a blog on it, at http://ruario.ghost.io/2015/07/22/scripts-for-vivaldi-fans-running-mac-and-linux/. But that site is now down. I was able to use the --args --profile-directory="$1" command line switch, but when I closed the new instance my main V instance crashed with it.

The difficulty creating a separate profile in Linux is unexpected. Is there no simple way to accomplish this?

  • It's still on his github: https://gist.github.com/ruario/8f648cc3069d1a55d9c8

But if you just want to test Vivaldi in a clean state, you can delete the profile folder of your main install instead. Just make a backup and copy it back in after you're done. Or even simpler -- disable all your extensions.

  • I using flag --user-data-dir="path to profile" ( https://www.chromium.org/user-experience/user-data-directory ) in shortcut.
Vivaldi knows this function from Chromium.

Thanks. I've saved that link for possible future use. Yes, one can do a profile shuffle, but the solution below is much better, for reasons I will give.

Thank you. This seems to be working perfectly. The other way didn't divorce the executables for some reason, but this one does. This affords not only the ability to do clean profile testing, one can run two ongoing profiles, which I have been doing by using a different chromium derivative. So for as long as this switch remains viable, this is the best solution - short of working multiple profiles into the GUI, which I hope happens.

    Thank you guys.
