Tab stacking suggestion

  • I think that there should be a tick under the tab stacking options that allows Vivaldi to automatically stack tabs from the same domain.

For example you open 10 YouTube videos in separate tabs and 5 Reddit posts in separate tabs. With this option on, it will look like just two tabs.

And when the cursor hovers over each of those two tabs, a dropdown menu appears showing all the "subtabs" in a list like in Windows.

My idea stems from how Windows (after 7) handles open programs in the taskbar - all Explorer windows are stacked, all Vivaldi windows are stacked, etc.

  • @TianlanSha Stack Tabs by Host is already available from the Tab context menu. There's also an option in Settings, Tabs, to open links in the same Tab Stack.

    Stack Tabs by Host

I'm afraid I don't see such an option on Vivaldi 1.8.770.50 (Stable channel) (64-bit)

I even used the search function for "host" but no such thing is there. The only thing I see is Open Tab in Current Tab Stack which I tried and it does something else.

  • @TianlanSha, hi, this setting is in the context menu (right mouse click on tab).

    Cheers, mib

I second that. I would love to see *auto-*stacking.

In addition to that, I'd like an option to auto-stack tabs "originating" from one tab. I mean, when you open a link in another tab, that new tab forms a stack with the current tab. We already have an option "Open Tabs in Current Tab Stack", so it wouldn't be hard to implement my proposal.

  • @mib2berlin Uh, no I don't see it in the context menu when I:

    1. Right click on a tab
    2. Create a tab stack and right click on the tab stack

please send me your special Vivaldi builds that have that option because I obviously do not have it. :)

And even if it's in the context menu (which apparently isn't the case for me), it should be in the tab options as a tick to allow it by default. As you explain it to be, it seems like a bother to use it - having to right click and choose it for each domain.

  • @TianlanSha You obviously don't have two or more tabs from the same host open, or if you do, you're not right-clicking on one of them.

I did last time, I will demonstrate it again. Here I opened 5 tabs from an elitist snob Windows fanboy news website called Neowin and tried to righclick on tabs in any way that comes to mind:

    1. tabs stacked
    2. tabs unstacked, unselected
    3. tabs unstacked, selected

and I still don't see this particular option.

  • @TianlanSha It's there, in the screenshot you labelled "tabs unstacked, unselected." The menu entry Pesala is talking about is "Stack Tabs by Host." But that is not the feature you are looking for of automatically stacking tabs opened on the same domain. This is why you're confused.

There's a similar option in the settings under Tabs > Tab Stacking called "Open Tabs in Current Tab Stack," but it's not strictly what you're looking for either.

This is a good request, and I also think it would be a good addition to Vivaldi.

YEEEESSS... I finally see it. xD haha

  • This would be nice as a quick command and as an optional automatic behavior as TianlanSha suggested.
