Revert to Previous version
-
I've just updated to the latest version of Vivaldi and it is an unmitigated disaster as far as I am concerned - each time I close down it will not restart after I've imported Bookmarks, etc. from the earlier version (which I took the precaution of saving in a totally separate folder from .config/Vivaldi). Additionally I am unable to import or recover the Tabs I had open in the earlier version which I thought would be a simple matter of copying and pasting from where I had stored them on my computer. Each time I want to start Vivaldi I have to delete it from the .config file and the Software manager and start all over again. Please can you tell me how to revert to the previous version?

@BazP I should add that my previous use of Vivaldi has been very rewarding and it may help if I post the output of the Terminal when I type "Vivadi":
[11357:11357:0329/185722.298668:ERROR:edid_parser.cc(181)] invalid EDID: human unreadable char in name
[11418:11418:0329/185722.878688:ERROR:child_thread_impl.cc(762)] Request for unknown Channel-associated interface: ui::mojom::GpuMain
Segmentation faultThanks in anticipation of anybody's help.

@dLeon thank you for getting back to me. I'm using Linux Mint 17.3 (if that's the information you require) and when I close Vivaldi I always go to "Administration" "System Monitor" to ensure that no Vivaldi processes are using any resources.

@dLeon I've reverted to the earlier version using your excellent guidance and everything is working OK. Thanks again for your help Leon

@BazP -- Just to echo the comments you've already received, i think you were very unlucky with your recent Stable upgrade. I keep both Stable & SS on my computers, but i basically live in the SS, don't really use Stable too much, however i keep them both always updated via my distro repo. Since the 1.8 Stable upgrade recently i'd not tried it [as i said, i live in SS], but reading your story now i launched it -- all good, closed it, waited a bit, relaunched it -- all good again.
I imagine you might not now have any appetite for this, but maybe it's worth trying one more time to upgrade it? You can see from dLeon's & my comments, + lots of other people in the main topic, that 1.8 Stable is not universally failed... so logically one possibility is that a glitch occurred during your download or installation, before...?

@Steffie Hello Steffie and thanks for getting in touch. I usually run sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade daily and I've just noticed that, in the latter, is vivaldi-stable. I've just basically backed up everything in my "Home" directory so I'll give it a go...fingers crossed!

It didn't work - exactly the same fault as reported earlier - wouldn't start from the Menu nor the terminal.

@BazP -- That's really astonishing! Can i ask - would you be prepared to use SS rather than Stable, & if so, does it behave for you?

You didn't say what variant. I just fired up my cobwebbie old Mint 17.3 KDE4 VM [kernel 4.4.0-28], updated V-Stable to latest via Update Manager, & launched it... fine. Closed it, waited til all processes ended, relaunched it... fine again.
I used to have 17.3 Cinnamon, Mate & Xfce VMs too, but deleted them some time ago, so cannot now test those for you. However i do feel that V-Stable is likely only a symptom of your true problem, but not the problem root-cause itself. Have there been any other pgms of any kind, or the OS itself, that have recently given you cause for concern? Is it viable for you to reinstall 17.3... or upgrade to 18.1, or move to an alternative distro?

@Steffie I'm using Cinnamon...not being an expert I started with Cinnamon Mint and stuck with it.
I have 18.1 on another drive which I hardly use so I'll try that but not for a day or two as I have this nagging feeling it's all going to go wrong!
Thanks again for your help and I'll come back to this forum with the results. -
