Strange GIF/GIFV Behaviour

  • This problem has persisted across all versions of Vivaldi, including the latest (1.8.770.44). I'm on Windows 7 x64.

While browsing reddit, I often run into a problem where GIFs/GIFV videos hosted on Imgur don't display when opened directly; the first frame of the GIF is shown, then it vanishes. However, the same GIF will play fine when I view it as embedded media within its related reddit thread, and it doesn't happen with all GIFs/GIFV media. It's also not a problem with Firefox or IE. Here's an example of one of these problematic GIFs:

https://i.imgur.com/2hAoLyA.gifv (here is the reddit thread with the same GIF embedded)

As mentioned above, the direct link works in other browsers. Here is an example of a GIFV that plays fine when opened directly:

    https://i.imgur.com/8ElOPdF.gifv

I'm not sure what the difference is between these two files. Any ideas why this is happening?

    Thanks!

  • Hard to tell, they all work fine for me. Although I noticed on other occasions that the loading of gifs can be extremely slow.

  • @PaddyM
All of those *.givf just point to normal MP4 isom baseline AVC x264.
They all play normally on me.
You do know what GIFV format actually is, right?

What is strange, https://i.imgur.com/8ElOPdF.gifv actually play in Vivaldi?
That's mean h264 was normal in Vivaldi on your system.
Three of them in same AVC x264 format.

Usually those *.gifv just didn't play because missing h264 codec.

  • These videos of work on Windows 10.

Do you use any extensions in Vivaldi?

You have already on your Windows 7 installed these two?

    • Windows Media Player
    • Media Feature Pack

    The video is video/mp4 (MPEG).
Perhaps you have a problem with your GPU driver or hardware acceleration.

    Please:

    1. open vivaldi://gpu
    2. tell us what is written in 1rst section

May be these two solutions can help:

    • Solution A
    1. Open vivaldi://chrome/settings/search#hardware from address field
    2. Activate or Deactivate "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    3. Restart Vivaldi
    • Solution B
    1. Open vivaldi://flags/#disable-accelerated-video-decode from address field
    2. Change the flag
    3. Restart Vivaldi

  • Thanks for the responses everyone.

I do, I tried disabling all of them, restarting the browser and then checking the links again - same problem.

You have already on your Windows 7 installed these two?

    • Windows Media Player
    • Media Feature Pack

I think so, I can play MP4 x264/h264 files from my hard drive, if that matters. I can also view the GIFs in question when they're embedded in another webpage, so it seems like I have the necessary software.

    Please:

    1. open vivaldi://gpu
    2. tell us what is written in 1rst section

Tried all of your suggestions, none worked unfortunately.

I forgot to mention that I'm using the Portable version of Vivaldi (I used the "standalone" option during installation). Not sure if that's helpful/relevant.

I also tried the obvious stuff, such as clearing the cache, cookies, etc. Not sure what else to try.

    Thanks for your time!

  • I post this few days ago a nobody helps me.. my win 7 x64 is clean install from a week ago... gifs dont work on facebook, even redtube, pornhub videos cant play..

and my windows is clean install from few days ago.. in chrome and firefox works everything fine i look for media feature pack but.. download size is more than 360MB so why i will install a package like that for something that works perfectly on other browsers?

@gh0stzk: Vivaldi cannot afford yet to pay the licensing for various media codecs, etc. to be downloaded with the browser. Hence, it relies on whatever codecs and such you already have on your system. It tries to use whatever Windows-native codecs/apps exist to display media. It would appear that in my Win7 install and in my Win10 installs, all of the necessary media decoders already exist - because I do not have media difficulties in Vivaldi. But anything your SYSTEM is missing is something Vivaldi will not be able to play/display.

    Can't help in that department.
Better ask Microsoft why their package get bigger & bigger.
Win10 version only maximum to 102MB though.

    Doesn't mean to not help.
But multimedia is a round around problem.

Sometime, even trying to explain how to make it work is kind of hard.
Especially if people just expect everything just work. Novice PC user come in mind.

    In my rough knowledge.
(I'm not patent expert nor even novice).
Mozilla & Google have access to proprietary libraries, in this case h264.
Mozilla probably paid for it, at least on/for Windows version. They do still have real revenue.
Google doesn't really need to, that company is part of MPEG LA who practically patent h264.

Other browsers like Vivaldi & Opera choose to avoid patent encumbrance. These browsers will use it if user have this problematic libraries.
As far as I know, paying to MPEG LA increase every year without limit.

Current Mozilla Firefox basically doesn't support h264 outside Windows, they prefer webm since beginning. On GNU Linux, I also need to download big list of packages compiled with proprietary format just for Firefox could use them.

Google recently (2015?) also advertise to kick out h264 in favor to their own open format webm (and their open image format webp). But of course, currently only big talked on their side. But, if they do, no h264 for Google Chrome in future.

Other example library in Windows is Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 ACM . A superior MP3 library. Audiophile swear on its quality. Windows come with it, but most 3rd party multimedia applications not dare to touch/use it. Microsoft don't allow us to use it.

FWIW, I'm using Vivaldi (1.7.735.46 (Stable channel) (32-bit)) on a Win7-64 system with Norton AV, and my results duplicate yours exactly. This is true whether my two extensions (Ghostery and Click&Clean) are enabled or disabled individually.

Then, I tested on the same system with Firefox (which in my installation employs the NoScript extension), and the first of your imgur gifv's (2hAoLyA) fails to play even in Firefox. When FF first visits that link, I get a static image of the cat, and if I then temporarily enable site scripting in NoScript, the image area goes black and remains that way. On the other hand, when I test the second gifv (8EIOPdF) in Firefox and then temporarily enable scripting in NoScript, the video plays fine. The point is that the two Imgur videos have some kind of differences in Firefox as well as Vivaldi.

  • I read what install that package, mediacenter, windows player etc.. i already have on my win 7... but i will install.. i really like this browser.

They both play here(Linux) but FYI the reddit mp4 is scaled down with a file size of 1.6mb while the imgur mp4 is 8.5mb.
Have you tried reloading the imgur tab once the mp4 has downloaded which may take quite a number of seconds depending on your bandwidth.

Interesting, I guess the reddit version is "re-encoded" then? If so, perhaps it is just a software issue and I just happen to have the correct software for the reddit version of the GIF and not the Imgur one (still doesn't explain why Firefox and IE don't have this issue, though).

Have you tried reloading the imgur tab once the mp4 has downloaded which may take quite a number of seconds depending on your bandwidth.

Yeah, I noticed many GIFs taking way too long to load even on my fibre optic connection (80MB baby! :sunglasses:) but refreshing the page after it fully loads doesn't seem to help.

  • No other ideas about this issue? The problem still exists on the current version of the browser.

  • @PaddyM same issue here with reddit. It's stuck on loading gif, but never complete (i'm on VDSL2). Instead of imgur that works fine. The endless loading page on reddit occours also with Fitefox, Opera and Chromium, until i click over the animated loading icon that reminds on the imgur page, and finally works.
I'm on Linux Mint 18.1 (Cinnamon) all updated.

  • No idea why but on the reddit page no image gets loaded, either in latest Vivaldi snapshot or in Firefox. Just a spinning icon, no byte gets downloaded in both browsers.
If I click on it, a quickly disappearing image appears then replaced by a imgurl blank page with a clickable "download" and downloading it I get an actual .gif of 50mb.
What's strange is that not even the imgur link with no extension specified
    https://imgur.com/2hAoLyA
shows any image or animation, just the empty imgur page with only an ad on top, the description "Meet the cat who knows how to protect its cash" and below it just the number of views.
    The 8ElOPdF.gifv displays correctly.
Examining the html pages of both, it shows pratically the same content, it should display a jpg as a static image, and a mp4 or alternatively a gif as animation.

  • @iAN-CooG yes, it seems a reddit issue afterall. Something seems broken within the domain, or maybe could be some bandwith saturation/request ?

  • The problem I'm having seems to be different from you guys'. For me, the GIFs in question only work when viewed via Reddit. When I open the GIF directly on Imgur, it vanishes after 1 frame and no further page loading occurs. The GIFs work fine in other browsers, both via Reddit and directly, which indicates to me that Vivaldi is where the issue lies.

  • The Video is: https://i.imgur.com/2hAoLyA.mp4
The animated GIF image is: https://i.imgur.com/2hAoLyA.gif
    Imgur is: https://imgur.com/2hAoLyA

All play fine on Windows 10x64.

  • No problem here either on Win10 x64 for either of the three links.
