Bug? Bookmarks Bar Arrow

  • When I click on the bookmarks bar arrow at the far right of the bookmarks bar, the "wait circular arrow", or whatever the old hourglass icon is now called, appears and their is a delay for the bookmarks bar window that appears vertically on the right side to appear.

  • Moderator

How many bookmarks do you have? 100.000? That may provoke such delay.
    No, i am kidding.

How many bookmarks do you really have?
Perhaps a program blocks the Bookmarks file or it is corrpted.

How can I count? I think that's why I'm having my issues described in the other thread. Is there a way to count the bookmarks?

  • Moderator

@g_bartsch: Just open all the folders in the bookmark panel and scroll down, counting. That's what I did. That's how I know how many I have (abt 1400).

  • Actually, not too many, maybe hard to believe, but probably no more than a few hundred, and, these are the same bookmarks I have in Firefox and Chrome, and I do not have the same behavior with that bookmarks button that I do in Vivaldi. But, maybe I ought to delete all of my bookmarks from Vivaldi and start over, just in case some kind of corruption occurred when I imported them from Firefox.

  • @Ayespy That method tells me I have a lot more bookmarks than you. Too many likely. I don't want to try that. I can't count very high.

I could tell you how large my bookmark file is but I'm scared to face public ridicule. :frowning2:

  • Moderator

@g_bartsch - There's no ridicule in the offing.

@g_bartsch - I would be very curious to know what size bookmarks file actually affects performance if, indeed that is what's gumming up the works for you.

I also wonder how much trouble it would be for you to temporarily save off your Default file, to see how that affects performance, then move back JUST THE BOOKMARKS, and see what that does. That would help define once and for all whether it is really the bookmarks file or not.

  • @Ayespy I appreciate it. In the past I've been in 'debates' trying to defend the amassing of large numbers of bookmarks and don't want to attract any more attention like that.

  • @Ayespy I'm working on it. Finding something interesting. We are posting similar info to two threads. Should we shift it to one or the other?

  • Moderator

@g_bartsch: You pick. I'l answer where you go.

  • @Ayespy Thanks. Let's go to CPU or RAM to Blame. I'm sorry if I hijacked this topic.

There is a way that is a bit easier:
Copy the Bookmarks file from the "Default" folder and rename it as a textfile than give it to a program with a proper search function and search for the term http.
Advanced options in win-office for example give you the number of results that are found.
This method of course excludes every url / bookmark that doesn't start with http but you get a vague idea of how many bookmarks you posses.
In my Case the unbelievable amount of 17 :grimacing:

  • @zaibon Thanks. I used Baregrep and it did a killer job of listing all the URLs. I had about 6k. Not too bad.

  • Vivaldi Translator

    @zaibon
If you use "Bookmarks" file method it will hit all of them if you search for "url:".

I just count my latest total bookmarks a few hours ago. 1841.
Like year. And no, I'm not collecting them since that year.

  • Moderator

@dLeon: The data format from 1841 isn't compatible with modern operating systems anyway. I think they must have used CPM back then. ;)

  • Vivaldi Translator

    @Ayespy

CPM = Control Program for Microcomputers (Control Program/Monitor)?
OS for single tasking 8 bit multiprocessor, 64 kilobytes of memory. Feed that with your 1000 bookmarks.

Yes. Get's http and https both.

  • @dLeon Damn - this one is way better. I've to admit that I was just too lazy to look through the whole file to see if url: is used somewhere else in the file instead of only for the saved bookmarks.

  • @Gwen-Dragon So, what about my issue with the Bookmarks button? All replies are just joking about how many bookmarks they have accumulated. Does anyone else have the problem with the bookmarks toolbar button? Could it be a bug? As a moderator, do you communicate with the Vivaldi developers to inquire about these types of issues?
