Full screen should allow address search.

  • I can't access the address bar when in full screen. In regular mode I can [F6] , enter an address, and access the site. However, when in full screen [F6] has no effect.

I should be able to search/access a site using [F6] in full screen just as with regular mode.

  • F6 opens the bookmarkpanel as default for me but in fullscreenmode I use F2 as a workaround to enter the quickcommands.
Little downsite is you can't access / change the url you are curently on and to trigger a search you need to put a search nickname in from of it (based on your listed searchengines) which will open your search in a new tab.
To change the site you browse without generating a new tab you need to type a valid address or select one from the suggestions that popup in F2.

So do you agree with the suggestion? It seems to me fullscreen should allow any keystroke commands and then revert to fullscreen. However one accesses the search bar in limited screen should work in fullscreen. And it shouldn't end there. If [Alt f] opens the file menu in limited screen it should in fullscreen. Whatever keystrokes I perform in limited screen I should be able to do in fullscreen.

The only browser I'm aware of that handles search well in fullscreen is Midori. Firefox displays the search bar but doesn't return to a complete fullscreen. Fullscreen should always return to fullscreen.

  • @rhubarbpieguy Basically yes - I do agree with your suggestion but I also think that there possibly is a reason why so few browsers have this feature.
So my approach is more like don't make it a real fullscreen but instead just hide all toolbars and make them visible when you for example hit the border of your screen with your cursor. So there should be still full control over shortcuts because the urlbar isn't turned off but is just a slim line of 1pixel or so.
Only thing I can imagine where this might interfere with what you are doing in fullscreen mode might be watching videos where the player itself uses it's own shortcuts but I guess this could be solved with a shortcut that is able to switch between real fullscreen and completely hidden gui.

I just flat-out don't understand why fullscreen isn't designed to allow key commands. However, you make good workaround suggestions.

I have but two bars, the top header bar and url/search bar. It seems the url/search bar should have an auto-hide feature. If it does, I'm not seeing it. I wonder if there's such a feature for my Fluxbox header bar. It exists for the taskbar.

Is there a window manager with the feature? I'd simply use Midori to fix the fullscreen problem but Midori has no bookmark keywords.

  • Hi,
I am also desparately missing the shortcut commands and address bar in full screen mode. The commands should be independent of the normal screen mode.
Currently, only Alt+f works, but panel, address bar, status bar etc. cannot be turned on/off in full screen mode.
Further I am missing a shortcut for viewing the Download window. I don*t like to use everything in the panel because the space is so small. So please include a shortcut for the downloads (similar to the history).

Thanks in advance and all the best!

  • @eva_vivaldi
For the downloads you could bookmark chrome://downloads and give the bookmark a nickname so when you are in fullscreen mode open the quick command menu ("F2") and enter the nickname of that site.
