Reader Mode button and drag tabs between windows improvements - Vivaldi Browser snapshot 1.5.633.3/16

(I invented the term. It was funnier than just plain yellow )
-
It's also a bug in Vivaldi, as you should have the choice to have the settings be overridden by extension or not.
-
Win 7, 64 Bit, Viv 32
I KNOW you don't want to know I'm on FF but I'll explain. Viv, this build NOT previous, takes 97.5% of my memory but with FF it's 34% which would you use? No matter what I do I cannot work with Viv fast enough to keep it from crashing…it EATS memory so fast!!
For the second time I used the auto update ( think it was before some corrections in file I read about, but didn't follow) ...every time I do I get problems unlike downloading the whole file.
Downloaded, or tried to, some files, reader totally crashed. Rebooted safe mode etc. tried to clean up memory where I could go to Viv and download version....ate memory, crashed again.
Cleared memory downloaded Viv with FF reinstalled and again crashed. I gave up don't have time to mess with it for now. FF has been on for about 10 min still 34% with as many tabs.
Thought I'd give that up to to discuss. Have fun...I know it's me. -
Above I got Viv to load and I tried erasing cache and cookies and watched the total memory of system quickly eat up from 5 Gig and go to 7 Gig in less than minute. Currently only using 2.8 Gig
If I uninstall Viv then reinstall will I lose everything. I think working files are so corrupted that will be the only way to get stable but DON'T want to lose settings which I am sure are no good.

You'd think so, but it's a bit more complicated than that…
With Chrome, an extension can be granted permission to change and override a setting or policy. (You grant these permissions when you install the extension.) If a setting is overridden, the Chrome preference is locked, greyed out, and marked with a "puzzle piece" icon; clicking that icon gives you the option to either disable the extension that's overriding the setting or go to the extension's option management controls to change the setting there. Vivaldi does not (yet) provide this clarity or functionality. Some Chrome settings in Vivaldi have even been eliminated (presumably replaced with a sensible default) and I'm not sure what happens if those are overridden... or even if they can be overridden.
It gets even more fun: If you install "uBlock Origin", then install "WebRTC Network Limiter", you'll have uBlock overriding Vivaldi's WebRTC setting and WebRTC NL overriding uBlock; WebRTC NL wins.
In the end, regardless of what we think is the right thing to do, for Chrome extensions to work in Vivaldi, Vivaldi has to behave like Chrome or risk breaking things in potentially really weird and subtle ways.

I can't stress this enough, but an option to disable automatic checking of updates is crucial, especially for people with certain mental conditions and/or OCD, since the most important thing about updates are, well, updates. How we are presented those updates plays an important part.
I know I am just a scrub against the Vivaldi dev gods, but a feature like that fixes every future update from here on out.
-
Hehe lucky guy. Wish I had an error like that
-
That that must have been the fastest feature request ever implemented in the history of feature requests. It's not working here either but I'l patiently await for the next snapshot to play with it
-
Yeah I mostly agree.
Personally I woudn't need "full customization options" although I totally understand some may like it. But a "night mode" with light text on black background would eventually be welcome indeed. A lot easier on the eyes for us photophobics -
Hey guys thanks for fixing VB-22064 and reader mode is great.
VB-22064 (Gesture editing touch support, limit to left mouse button)doesn't seem fixed here though, if the Settings Window is in a tab I still can't define a gesture with the right mouse button, only the left.
Should I report a new bug or is it still a work in progress?
-
OMG OMG OMG OMG! Background tabs are no longer lazy loaded on startup, they load immediately after restart! There's a setting for it too in Startup Options.
Thank you so much
-
thanks for the update, I notice that in recent snapshots (2 or 3 snapshots) the pagefile usage just keeps going up even if I close all the tabs. This happens on both 32bit and 64bit systems on my computer (when I revert to snapshot Vivaldi.1.5.609.8, the browser uses less pagefile and ram but still as fast and the pagefile usage drops when I close all the tabs) so I hope this will be addressed soon.

Tested here on Windows 764bits and didn't see an issue. Are you full screening the video on the main window?
I only got the task bar above the video if I clicked outside the Vivaldi windows, or focused on another non-Vivaldi Window. If one or the other Vivaldi windows was focused, the video was always on top -
I m getting error while downloading 64bit windows installer.
I also see this certificate error "There are issues with the site's certificate chain (net::ERR_CERT_REVOKED)."
-
Basically what was leaked now doesn't share anything with what you saw back then apart from the basic interface. So let me assure you a big part of the team is working constantly on it and there is great progress although you can't see it.
-
"VB-22064 (Gesture editing touch support, limit to left mouse button)"
This reads like the right mouse button was never intended to be used for defining gestures in the first place. So I'd say this is not a bug but intended behaviour.
-
Can you post some screenshots?
-
Reader mode seems handy but definitely needs a lot of work still. Tried a couple of sites and it didn't seem to detect the article text (gizmodo, theverge).
-
Thank you, so it's better already, but you give up to thumbnails on the other tabs.
It would be nice a hybrid between the two functions.
