Snapshot 1.0.174.8-1 Startup settings and tab-switching performance
-
Thanks for this build! Tab switching is way faster now, although sometimes they still take a while to load/switch properly.
Now, I hadn't realized this until I started using the browser's Task Manager (I'm so glad you guys made it, finding which tab is devouring your RAM is a real life saver), but the memory usage just skyrockets without any reason! Right now this Vivaldi page is using more than 500K! I know this is a Chromium problem, as Google Chrome and Opera 15+ also present this issue, but do you guys think it can be fixed? It's really annoying having a tab with a single image consuming the same amount of memory or more than a YouTube tab running a 1080p video.
Also another annoying feature of Chromium based browsers: when you select text in multiple lines, blank spaces also get selected. Do you think it's possible to make selection work as it did on Presto, where only text was selected?

Thanks! It is really weird to be the one writing the comments and giving the feedback, rather than the one tracking the feedback.
-
Thanks Mağruf. Nice to see you too!
-
I hope you are also working on tab creation and closing performance. It is still pretty slow here on Linux. If you hold Ctrl+t for a few seconds you really see the problem.
-
Yeah there are more optimizations coming up
-
Good times. I'm looking forward to it!
-
There is HiDPI support but only at 200% currently, AFAIK. Don't have a suitable machine to hand to test.

I don't know how to quantify this but tab switching seems much improved for me. Switching from one to another is basically instantaneous. And when moving from one tab stack to the next the previews appear very quickly as well. I'm very pleased with this and if it never got faster I would not complain. But of course, if you think you can squeeze even more milliseconds out of this go ahead! Thank you!

Thanks, It is weird to be one of the ones giving feedback, rather than one of the ones collecting it. :p

Hmm, now I have tabs disappearing… I can still find it from the Windows menu, but the tab itself is gone (I use vertical tabs).

Minimum font size, please? This scaling like IE does is for the birds.
The tab issue is a lot better as it makes the browser more responsive.
-
Who knows what the future will bring! :p
-
"activity that is going on on speed optimization" thank you
-
Doesn't crash here. Tried clean install?
-
I though you are already in not officially but in… whatever, the time will come when you'll have to rise (join the team here ) So welcome!
-
Yes I agree and will report now.
-
Great - now my main headache actually is something stupid: that I can't drag the window around by clicking in the (empty) tab area and drag. It is extremely fiddly to exactly get that small border where one can drag…
Thanks and cheers,
Tom

Noticed the same problem with tabs opening to the left side instead of the right. This happened to me when i left-clicked on links that open a new tab (as opposed to opening new tabs with middle click). Unfortunately, I too cannot reproduce the bug at will, as I have no idea what triggers it.

Why does Vivaldi always open in a Window if I startup from Home Page or Speed Dial? It should startup maximised if that's how it was when I closed it.

It's getting there, the performance is certainly better than before, but not quite yet. But I want to believe that things are on the right track now
