Is the "Look Up" context-menu function working?

  • I seem to remember that selecting a word, middle-clicking on it, and selecting the "Look Up" menu item invoked a popup that is a dictionary search of the word. Recently I noticed that it's broken: selecting the "Look Up" item doesn't do anything. Is this only me?

(I'm on Mac and a three-finger tap looks up dictionaries and Wikipedia for the word and so I don't care about the middle-click look up too much.)

  • I have no "Look up" but 2 "search": "search for <selected text>", using the default search engine and the other "search with" which lets you choose any engine defined, using standard english UI; everything works as intended, but it's on the right-click context menu.

I have no "Look up" but 2 "search for",

Really? My context menu has "Look Up" at its top! (So, my problem is that that function isn't working.)

You make me suspect that I have some addon installed, which adds this context-menu item . . . but, only Google Translate is suspicious among the addons I have, and Google Translate adds "Google Translate" to the context menu and works differently from how "Look Up" works.

    I'm puzzled.

  • You have only one way to find out: disable all your extension and see which is adding that context menu. At that point, you can point out to the extension developer that it's not working in Vivaldi, for sure it's not (totally) Vivaldi's fault.

Thanks! but Vivaldi's behavior is exactly the same when I disable all addons, quit Vivaldi, and re-launch it: The "Look Up" item is there and doesn't work.

    Is the feature Mac-specific?

Seems so. Is the look up feature working for you in other browsers, like Safari? If only in Vivaldi it doesn't work, report it

  • So, I appreciate it if you could move this thread to the Mac forum.

Thanks. Yes, it works on Safari.

First of all, a three-finger tap on a selected word brings up the popup window showing the result of a dictionary search. This is an OS-wide service, which works on Vivaldi, Firefox, Safari, Preview (a PDF viewer), etc.

In addition to that, Vivaldi and Safari provide this feature through the context menu, "Look Up". It currently works on Safari, but not on Vivaldi.

Actually I submitted a bug report a while ago. I started this thread only because I'm not sure whether this problem is reproduced on other people's systems.

By the way, I think this is a great OS service and I hope more applications, like text editors and command terminals, will support it.

  • It's not working for me too. I don't have any extensions installed. However it works in Safari and Chrome

  • I've mentioned it here https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/14933/vivaldi-does-not-support-native-macos-features/

It should work, it's very useful but many native features are not working on Vivaldi
