Vivaldi repository times out when using synaptic.

  • Hello,
    This is a low priority issue since it does not affect Vivaldi installs/updates but once it made synaptic wait until a timeout occurred. This repo always fails to update
    http://repo.vivaldi.com/snapshot/deb repo InRelease

    Here is a screenshot of the error in synaptic : https://scontent.fybz1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/15940747_10154087168215474_4856657767436833128_n.jpg?oh=b7d482b128802bbc9079cc244e6112a1&oe=59205DCD

    Thank you!

    That's strange. You're not behind any proxy or firewall?
    Could you show your

    Please show us your traceroute to repo.vivaldi.com

    @paralaks
    Your source.lists looks OK.

    Some thought:

    • Try to ping against repo.vivaldi.com. See if it return like mine repo.vivaldi.netdna-cdn.com (146.88.128.224). Note, I don't how many Vivaldi server are.
    • Try to run traceroute againt repo.vivaldi.com. We could check if there's a bottle neck.
    • Check if your ISP not reroute the network. Some users (including me) suffer this.
    • Try to use apt-get update or apt update instead synaptic.

  • To make sure it was not missed, I get Vivaldi updates fine either with command line or with synaptic. Timeout has happened only twice in the last few months but that failure message is always there.

    These are the outputs:

    @paralaks
    You've being re-route there.
    The ping result looks weird. Why it goes to that address/ip?

    Is Vivaldi server support IPv6?

    I try to ping the address that have "tor" in it (except Toronto). They also randomly miss.

    About netdna-cdn.com.
    Google search show uncomfortable results. First this domain recognized to deliver malware. Either your ISP, DNS or someone block that domain. For a record my one of uMatrix subscriptions completely block their new main webpage www.maxcdn.com. I don't said Vivaldi repo has malware. I just pass about it when studying you problem.

  • @paralaks I trust that you also have 'apt-fast' installed (a 'wrapper' for apt). Updates/upgrades become supercharged multi-threaded download affairs...
    Not a cure for something not available, but certainly faster for pulling packages down.

  • @paralaks OMG that sucks.

    Perhaps the netdns-cdn content provider uses geoip redirection or blocking. Or you have strange routing.

    Please send us in report from where you are, which tracerout you have, what happens.
    One of our admins will check it then.

    How to do a bugreport for Vivaldi:
    Please describe as precisely as you can and report the bug at https://vivaldi.com/bugreport/.
    You will get a bug confirmation mail and in a reply to this mail you can add more information and files as attachments for the testers and bug tracking team.
    Thanks in advance.
