Accessing site certificate now more difficult (Vivaldi 1.7+)

  • Chromium 56+ (and thus Vivaldi 1.7+) has made this curious change when clicking on the site badge in the URL bar.

    Before:

    Now:

And that "Learn more" just leads to a poor excuse for a help page.

In order to view a certificate now, you have to know to go to Dev Tools in the first place, then figure out how to get there, then realize that you want the Security section.

Is there a way for Vivaldi to revert to the old way ("Details" link) or is this a lost cause because Google?

  • I think we have to "thank" Chrome maintainers for this, seems not a thing introduced by Vivaldi.

  • Agree. More stupid dumbing-down by Do No Evil Inc. Sigh.

The bug was already reported by me days ago.

Crazy, even Chromium 57 does not have the Detail link any more.
Ctrl Shift I + selecting tab Security is a pain. :bug: :bug: :bug:
No chance to check quickly which SSL is used.
Bad solution of Chromium devs :scream_cat:

Bug or feature request? I have a sinking suspicion that this isn't a bug on Google's part.

I do notice though that Opera dev, despite being based on recent Chromium, does still make it easy, so Vivaldi should be able to as well.

I regard a previous longtime feature missing as a Chromium bug.
! could not find in Chrome blog a hint for removing this.

The Detail link will be readded by Vivaldi devs. The detail of a cert is important for powerusers.

  • I also miss this option painfully. So I hope, that it'll got a high priority to take this feature back. The possibility to investigate certificate is very usefull not only for technically advanced users.
    Thank you devs.

Indeed, easy access to a site's certificate is an important thing nowadays.

  • who in the world over on the chrome side thought of making such a ridiculous change not only that its unsafe practice we cant just trust the green padlock outright and this exactly why we need browsers like Vivaldi mainstream browsers are getting dumber i vote Vivaldi make their own SSL information panel i personally was a user of Firefox before the switch to Vivaldi and liked how they displayed information
    kill the chrome in chromium
id like to see a delta for this

    Just a thought:

Maybe Chromium devs follow "HTTPS Everywhere Switch Planner mode" placement.
If we see it this way, the new annoying placement of certificate view kind of make sense. We don't need to travel to padlock. But this mode, as already mentioned here, only useful for web devs.

There's been discussion backstage about reverting this For Vivaldi but, if they do, it's another patch they have to maintain with every new Chromium update. For the sake of efficiency, the fewer of those, the better.

  • @Ayespy It could look something like this:

    @Ayespy
Instead a major revamp to padlock information which probably need big code, maybe it could just a link to instantly open devtool point to Security tab.
This also nice if one day the devtool finally merge to Vivaldi window.

@dLeon: Devtool docking to window is an actual project right now...

    Yes, I know.

  • @Ayespy Perfect news, thank you for such info. ;-)

I absolutely love that suggestion and the style

    i
agree that it is more work however something like this is a basic feature and its very important to actually verify the legitimacy of a secure connection granted it is still there but is very much hidden now i think its worth it
Vivaldi's mission is to bring back life into the web browser and calling something so minor of a change into question because of the time and trouble it would cause does not really make that much sense considering the great things the team has done that were far more complex and out of the box then a new SSL inspection window as another user pointed out even the new opera as bad as it has become has found a way to keep it
this will be just one more thing to make Vivaldi great even if the community members are the only ones to appreciate it

  • Bringing this back in some form is under discussion, and this post shows the "current plan"... https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=663971#c64
