Vivaldi Fails To Open After 4 or 5 Uses

  • Using Linux version 1.5658.44-1 64 bit. After using it and closing it it fails to open after the fourth or fith time of use. I have to reboot in order to get it to open again. I have been trying to get it to work for more then four or five time for several days but it always fails after the fourth or fifth time I close it. I always close it by using the "X" in the upper right corner. After it fails to open when I try in terminal I get: " $ /usr/bin/vivaldi-stable %U
Created new window in existing browser session." Yet it isn't. Rebooting my computer is the only fix. Just guessing I tried deleting (actually renaming) the singelton lock but still get the message it is running. Tried a reinstall but no change. Any help appreciated.

When vivaldi fails to start check to see if it is still running via terminal ps aux | grep [v]ivaldi

If it is try killing with killall vivaldi-bin
    and then attempt to start.

I am having this problem with both vivaldi and opera.

  • @CantankRus Thanks. Yes it was running and I was able to kill it but that leaves the question of how to permanently fix it. I like using it but having to go in and manually kill it every four or five uses is going to get old very quickly.

  • @ray2047
    No idea how to fix.
I create quicklist menu items to kill for both Opera and Vivaldi in Ubuntu.

  • @ray2047 do you also have Opera installed?

Have you tried after temporarily renaming ~/.config/vivaldi/Default to something else (to make a new profile)?

I have the same version of vivaldi-stable as you but don't have this issue.

    When I check ps -o pid,ppid,stime,time,command -u aesouza

    I get
    PID PPID STIME TIME COMMAND
    1990 1254 15:03 00:02:46 /opt/vivaldi/vivaldi-bin
    1995 1990 15:03 00:00:00 cat
    1996 1990 15:03 00:00:00 cat
    1999 1990 15:03 00:00:00 /opt/vivaldi/vivaldi-bin --type=zygote
    2002 1999 15:03 00:00:00 /opt/vivaldi/vivaldi-bin --type=zygote
    2096 2002 15:03 00:00:06 /opt/vivaldi/vivaldi-bin --type=renderer --disable-smooth-scrolling --enable-blink-features=ResizeObserver --primordial-pipe-token=C114D444D21
    2097 2002 15:03 00:00:21 /opt/vivaldi/vivaldi-bin --type=renderer --disable-smooth-scrolling --enable-blink-features=ResizeObserver --primordial-pipe-token=20AD370626E
    2098 2002 15:03 00:01:42 /opt/vivaldi/vivaldi-bin --type=renderer --disable-smooth-scrolling --enable-blink-features=ResizeObserver --primordial-pipe-token=9933744F955

  • You can also test by creating a new user profile.
Creates and uses a folder in your home directory called vivaldi-new-profile.

    vivaldi --user-data-dir=vivaldi-new-profile

Test for a while using the above as the start command in terminal.

  • Thanks. Was resisting trying a new profile because I just got this one tweaked just right but since it is unusable any way will try that.

As to a custom kill menu I was already considering that but would like to try to fix it first.

Either way, you won't lose your original profile. It will still be there.
