Old Vivaldi Community Rules

We updated the following rules by setting up a Code of Conduct instead that is available here: https://vivaldi.com/privacy/code-of-conduct/

Easy to follow:

Treat others with respect.
Be courteous.
Use the Search Feature before starting a new thread.
Use a short and clear title for new threads.
When reporting problems, tell us what platform you are on, browser version, extensions (if any), system specification (CPU, RAM), connection type and architecture (X32 or X64), and give us the steps to reproduce your issue.
Think first, think twice, before you write.
Don’t use ALL CAPS.
When in doubt, ask more questions and explain your perspective.
If you have any problems, please contact a forum moderator by clicking the link in their username and sending them a Chat message.
If you see a thread or post that violates our community rules, please flag the post for the attention of the moderators using the 3 vertical dots icon.
Moderators are unpaid volunteers, not Vivaldi staff members. Treat them with respect. If you have an issue regarding moderation, contact a Vivaldi Community Manager via Chat.
Users posting any of the following material will either be warned or banned:
Spam, scams, harassment, pornography, copyright-infringing material, self-promotion, hate speech, and/or any other language that is offensive or in violation of local or international laws. The forum administration reserves the right to determine what language is or is not acceptable.

@gaelle I find it weird to have lots of posts replying to some previous post, that does not quote any content at all for context. Example at feature requests

The replies I got by @RRR13 and by @Pesala, are that it saves space.

I agree that it saves space, it obviously does.

I argue that it wastes time, much more time than what is saved by not scrolling through the extra space.

Strings of replies without context like the one in the example are meaningless without context. So for the sake of one user saving space, and saving their time by not providing context they waste everyone else's time, by reading/scrolling through meaningless posts, or having to click back to get it.

Naturally when the thread is short and about a single subject, quoting is probably not needed. Also on the features thread (or here, I hope) because a "reply" is not a reply to some specific post, but to the thread itself.

But when having (short) crossed conversations, should users be strongly encouraged to quote some context, or otherwise risk having their posts considered similar to spam?

Users will often quote an entire post, so one has no idea which paragraph they are referencing. Here, if you select some text before clicking quote, the reply will only contain the selected text.

However, this thread is about forum rules, not feature requests for the forum, and it's pretty much impossible to legislate for what is just a user's preference. I hate it when I have I have to skip loads of irrelevant text to get to the part that matters.

If the user does not make a question clear, then I will often just ignore their post, or sometimes I will ask them to clarify.

A bad use of quoting does not make another bad use of (not) quoting a good thing.

No it is not. Nor impossible, nor simply a user's preference.

Sure it has some subjectivity in it. So do the top two lines of the rules above: Treat others with respect, Be courteous.

It is a matter of usability, not a matter of doing it my way, but in a way that is useful.

If you'd like a non-subjective rule, for the feature request thread, that could be: No conversation. Period. Any post which is not ONE suggestion gets deleted. There is no need to be that harsh, as much as there is no need to one liners that only contains a "lol" or a mystery reply that helps nothing.

@gaelle Yesterday I reported one, or two, posts as spam(y). Today I get a message

"ERROR You do not have enough reputation to flag this post"

What changed? Did someone disagreed with my flagging? I would understand that, off course, but... And, what "reputation"?

@rkzn It's probably because there are spammers abusing the report button. So maybe now you need to have some reputation to be able to do so.

Reputation is probably calculated by number of posts, registration date and up votes.

But I'm just guessing.

@An_dz Don't think so. Reputation is upvotes alone. If you really wanted to mass spam/report etc. you could just make an alt account and upvote yourself. But that's overly complicated and therefore probably a good measure against offenders.

i just had a reputation removed. forum notified me by telling me i had an "upvote". this was discouraging.

i feel the rating was unfair, but everyone should be able to voice to opinion that a user is unhelpful. i think vivaldi should have a seperate hidden reputation for each user only accessible to admins for spammers and such. that way the good measures are less likely to be used improperly.

also, please change the notification from "upvoted your post" to "downvoted your post" if that's what happened. it could be a helpful feature that easily reminds me when im being annoying/unhelpful.

But that's not what happened. You're only being notified when your posts are upvoted. You don't know who and when (and sometimes why) downvoted your post.

Rules of common sense, but do not treat only the moderators with respect but everyone in general, including the Vivaldi Team. These seem excluded from this rule, as written

@catweazle What you are suggesting is literally the first rule. The first rule includes moderators naturally too, it could be argued mentioning them again specifically is superfluous.

Might be better stated to distinguish from rule 1:

Moderators are unpaid volunteers, not Vivaldi staff members. If you have an issue regarding moderation, do not complain about it in the forums (a bannable offence). Contact that moderator or another moderator via Chat.

Naturally, it's education basic. It just caught my attention to mention 2 times 'Treat moderators with respect. They are unpaid volunteers, not Vivaldi team members. This sounds for me as you just have to treat the moderators with respect, why they work voluntarily, but not the members of the team
