[bug] Impossible remove post...

  • Hi,
I have this message when I try remove my post...

    0_1479461085983_2016-11-18 09_23_29-Gmail very slow in Vivaldi _ Vivaldi Forum.png

    Is not cool...
    Regards.

Tweaked it a bit, users now have an hour to edit and delete posts

  • @steinar Why was it necessary to introduce limits to editing a post... has it been abused in the past? I think it can be very helpful not to constrict this in certain cases, such as an OP that needs to be changed over time to keep it up to date.

  • Vivaldi Team

The admin settings provide an input field to set the amount of time that users have to edit and delete. 0 = disabled, anything above is a limit in seconds.

There's currently no on/off switch, just a time limit. I could just work around it by setting an extremely high value, but I suppose in most cases 1 hour should be more than enough.

You've got a good point about long-running topics maybe needing to be updated after a while, will look into that.

  • @steinar okay but I have try to remove my posts just after insert...
if you check my picture I have try remove just after posts... because I don't correctly look this message is not for me x.x

and one hours is not good... imagine, you posts a message but one hours after, you find another information for help this people, but too late... you re create another post.... and one hours after.... exactly same problem...
after, this people think I spam him... is not cool x.x

I have conversation with @gaelle (before the new forum), and each time I insert new post because impossible edit my posts... I have send exactly 11 messages at different time.... At this moment I prefer edit my post ... not re-re-re-re-re posts yet and yet...

@borrougagnou if you have new information, a new reply is suitable. I think in most cases it can be beneficial to keep the whole record of the discussion, adding to it as new information is gathered.

  • @steinar But I don't think @gaelle is good to receive many many reply....
And I don't want to consider as a spammer....

If I insert wrong information, I prefer editing instead of re create another
I prefer to have just 1 person he have problem with your computer because I insert wrong information instead of each people type the same wrong information....
exactly same if I don't not enough detail I prefer editing for insert other information...

example, I find many topic with the people don't have insert OS, version, etc....
I prefer the people editing for insert information instead reply, I dislike when topic possess many page just because the people not insert enough detail...

and many people work in week...
We don't have connect h24 at the vivaldi forum....

This would all depend on whether there has been a reply. I think you should be able to edit if there is NO reply, but have to make new post if there was a reply.

  • @TbGbe yes I think is good idea

I personally think it would be best to not have any time limit on being able to edit one's own posts, if that is not too difficult to implement. That's how pretty much all forums have worked that I have been active on, and I think that that is the expected behavior for the vast majority of users.

There are various scenarios where being able to freely edit one's posts is useful. Just to name a few:

    • Poster realized that they posted wrong information, something very misleading, or so. A brief "Edit: ..." with a clarification added to that post can then be very helpful to other people later reading the thread, especially if it took a number of posts for the misunderstanding to be cleared up.
    • OP posts about a script/tweak that gets updated over time and the first post can then be kept up to date with the most recent information.
    • OP collects information, ideas, or so and collects and organizes them neatly in the first post.

  • @NSSynapse yes I entirely agreed with you,
and apparently is not change and my posts is mark at resolved ><"

EDIT: I have remove resolved because is not resolved, I waiting confirmation or changement for add my posts at resolved.

I would argue that if we want to completely remove the limit, we should keep a readable edit history, we don't have that feature yet. An hour should be enough to fix typos, etc.

  • @steinar No time limit to edit posts is best. Links can get broken at any time, but some threads keep running for years or turn up in searches. Broken links and missing images are a nuisance so I fix mine whenever I come across them.

I just edited this post, 19 hours after making it.

So what happens when You enter -1? xD

  • @steinar Even though I proof read before I post and review after I post, I'm human and sometimes miss mistakes. When I finally notice a mistake is completely unpredictable. It could be the next day or after someone replies, which could be a week later. Any editing limit makes too many assumptions.

Having an editing limit encourages messy threads as you have to use replies to add / fix things (like links or code or directions). A messy thread is a poor resource. Someone that comes along that didn't take part in the discussion will have a hard time figuring out the final state of things.

Editing limits are old school and they take away ownership of your posts as soon as the limit is reached. It's a "Your content becomes ours after an hour" ideal. It's not very nice.

As for editing history, I don't think that's necessary at all. What would be nice though is to have a checkbox when editing (unchecked by default) that one can check to trigger a notification of the post's edit (with reason text if you provide it). Sometimes it's necessary to say, "Hey, you need to see my changes)"

Having to use replies for edits totally distances the edits from the reply.

Editing limits are just a weird thing to have.

  • It might be worth pointing out that I can still edit my post in this thread. It seems the time limit to editing has been extended (/removed?).

  • @luetage yes I think, I have change the post by resolved

  • I don't thank the people is re-enabled block edit.... now impossible to change my topic in "not resolved"

@borrougagnou Why do you fear to ask a mod?
    I will change it.

  • @Gwen-Dragon I don't fear, just why create a mod if you have already this option?
