Feature requests for Vivaldi's new forum

@Telegram That sounds like a recipe for insecurity. All kinds of spammers and scammers would love to have secret accounts. It is much better if everyone can see what other users are doing here, so that they can report inappropriate forum use to the moderators.

    The team has an overview over all accounts and this remains so, it will never will be invisible to them. And a spammer becomes automatic automatically visible. When he starts to send people mails here, everybody will know him or her (;

btw: User should decide about their security settings. And everyone here has different preferences. What's good for you is not om for everybody ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

@Telegram Since you're not obliged to use your real name here or share any sensitive information about yourself, what would be a point of that?

No one who knows my vivaldi.net email address needs to see when I have logged in here or when I am online.
It' also so easy for spammer to collect email accounts since there is no email alias.

    Since there are good reasons. Please don't for get: Everyone has different needs (;

You can always create a separate account for the e-mail or for the forum and also you can select your on-line visibility to "Invisible".

If there are any good reasons and you know about them, then you should provide them here. Otherwise, the webdev team @ Vivaldi might not make the effort to implement the features that you ask for. You need to provide a little more elaborated argument than "Everyone has different preferences"...

  • @pafflick
more options for security settings speaks for it self. it's an argument in itself ^^ more security settings are never wrong, even facebook now offers quite a lot and it's a demand which should always be demanded by users and that's what i do ^^

like i said, it's always good to have lot's of security settings and it would also be good to have that because of webmail. since there is not the possibility to create an email alias. ( btw: my second separated email account can be founded by the vivaldi search since the new forum software )

But even if we ignore the webmail aspect. It should be possible to secure your account according to your preferences.

It's a very broad term, one can keep making such vague requests forever... So, don't expect to see any new features considering the security anytime soon if you don't make specific requests.

I'm not making any requests myself (considering the security of Vivaldi's webmail service) because I don't use it at all and I can't even tell what features it is missing.

  • (Vivaldi browser) Features requests area

I was thinking, as usually the request thread become very big, why don't split all the requests in some macro areas?

    • New vivaldi version (let say 1.8 xD)
      • User interface / Theming requests
      • Bookmarks / history requests
      • Privacy requests
      • Extensions / plugins requests (link to its section)
      • (sticked) Things in production

Probably I miss something, but maybe is better not to confuse people with many categories.

  • They need to get feature requests out of the forums. They're unwieldy, nobody reads the extremely long threads, and users need to repost every month or so.

It's a solved problem. Just make a github already, Vivaldi.

  • @jplanvers you're not considering they don't want to have a publicly visible tracker, else it would have been already done. Live with it.

  • I'm trying to convince them otherwise.

"Live with it" is a very hostile response. Perhaps you should take a deep breath.

  • @gaelle thanks for asking for feedback! ๐Ÿ™‚ i have a few specific feature requests after using/browsing the forum for ~5 hours total, roughly in weighted order:

    1. remove (IMO excessive) vertical whitespace between posts and horizontal whitespace on either side of post area (for example, see reddit or hacker news). right now the interface is very "vertical", which would be fine on mobile, but using vivaldi on a nice wide desktop monitor i'd prefer the interface to be more "tree-like" (again, see reddit et al)

    2. move circular avatars away from the upper left position of posts - they impede reading, at least for english speakers, since we scan words top left -> bottom right. the big circular avatar is like a "marble on a string" that gets in the way of the eye following the linear "string" of text

    3. discussion threads should be open by default (perhaps default-open threads would be easier with less whitespace as in #1)

    4. switch the numbered list of "pages" at the bottom with a simple "more" button (again following reddit et al)

Honestly the forum is already really good but IMO with a few of these improvements it would be amazing!

  • @jplanvers They do not want a public bug-tracker. What part of that sentence do you not understand?

  • Turns out you were 100% correct, but you don't work for Vivaldi and can't speak for them. What I don't understand is your hostility.

I'm concerned about your health. Have you tried meditating?

  • Heh, both messages were pretty hostile. People really get worked up on the internet! ๐Ÿ˜‰

That's an arrogant comment when you have already been told by a moderator who does have inside knowledge that they do not want a public bug-tracker.

  • You have the order wrong. The moderator replied to my "just make a github" post.

Me too. I was certain that I've made such request right after switching to this new forum platform - I even searched for it, but it turns out that I just whined about the lack of the "threaded view" ๐Ÿ˜ (which is available on the blogs and so it gave me a little hope that it could be introduced on the forums as well).

@rmloveland said in Feature requests for Vivaldi's new forum:

Could you elaborate on that, please? I'm not sure what do you mean by "discussion threads" (how are they different from other threads) and what do you mean by "open". You mean you wanted to reply to a closed thread? ๐Ÿค”

Do you mean you want to get rid of the pagination? This is already possible: just click on your avatar in the upper right corner of the page, go to the Settings and uncheck "Paginate topics and posts instead of using infinite scroll" under Pagination menu there.

I mean that if the view becomes more "tree-like" rather than "vertical pile of posts" it could make sense for the reply threads to a post to be open by default, rather than needing to click to open to see replies.

    Great, I'll try that, thanks!

  • Just a question: Is the forum a homegrown platform, or is it using some other product? Is some ways it looks a little like Discourse: http://www.discourse.org

  • @jeffpasch

The forum is using nodeBB now.

As I remarked the other day in a Team Blog reply thread, it'd be good if it was better tied into the "Community" section -- right now, I don't think there' any convenient way to navigate from a person's forum profile to their Community profile or vice versa (e.g. https://forum.vivaldi.net/user/isildur and https://vivaldi.net/easysocial-dashboard/profile/isildur).

  • I'd like an option for viewing replies. Either flat or threaded below the original message, but not both at the same time.

I like to always see the quoted text in a reply.
It's such a hassle to get to see what question is answered by a reply.
I can't understand how anybody (not even mobile phone users) can appreciate this strange behaviour.
