Videos not playing + browser needs manual restart a lot

  • Hi there,

I really like using Vivaldi over any other browser... except in the past months it has been acting weird.

Regularly and seemingly randomly, I need to restart it manually a lot when a I change over to a new tab or an already open one and it is totally gray (or sometimes a weird glitch where the icon of the tab is somehow multiplied over the whole tab window) meaning I can't see any of the website content. When I restart the browser this goes back to normal and all pages load normally and can be viewed.

YouTube loads weirdly: An error message inside the YouTube window appears. Sometimes I just need to refresh the webpage and it will play BUT other flash based videos (such as on or don't seem to load at all but still the windows with all play/stop/controls appears.

Hi, alexjean, could you add what OS / version you are using?

  • I am having a similar issue on Mac (everything work on my PC).

No videos will load AT ALL on Twitter, and HTML5 videos does not run at all on Youtube.
I have to use the extension "Disable Youtube™ HTML5 Player" to make any videos run using Flash player on Youtube, without it I just get the error message "An error occurred. Please try again later. (Playback id: OgWvv_mGN7bEG5B)".
The same goes for Twitch, a video won't load unless I use the normal Flash player.

    My system if it matter:
    Vivaldi 1.4.589.38 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
    OS X Yosemite 10.10.5
    Flash version
Widevine Content Decryption Module - Version:

    I am using the extensions:
    AdBlock 3.5.0
    BetterTTV 6.9
    Crunchyroll Unblocker 1.1 (DISABLED)
    Disable Youtube™ HTML5 Player 1.1
Herp Derp for YouTube™ 1.6.0 (DISABLED)
    Tampermonkey 4.1.10 (DISABLED)

  • @Aronand Hi, I'm using macOS Sierra: 10.12.1 (16B2555).

My broswer: Vivaldi 1.4.589.38 (Stable channel) (64-bit)
Flash: NPAPI Plug-in version, PPAPI Plug-in version

    My Extensions:
    AdBlock 3.5.0
    Google Cast 15.1120.0.4
    Videostream for Google Chromecast™ 2.16.1108.0

Could you tell me exactly what Mac model you both use?

  • @Aronand

    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)
Processor 2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB

    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)
Processor 2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB

  • Any update? I really don't want to use Safari. 😕

  • Vivaldi Team

Update on the issue: It is a known issue, its a problem with old Mac machines, we'll investigate further, as to what is causing the issue, and hopefully get a fix out, but its doubtfull it will be out in time for 1.5. Thanks for the report!

  • @Aronand Thank you. And yes please! I really really hope so!

  • in
the solution that works for me is

you can either start vivaldi from terminal with this command

    open /Applications/ --args --ignore-gpu-blacklist

to test it out, or go to vivaldi://flags and enable "Override software rendering list" to make above change permanent. It's the first entry on the site.

something to do with old gpu.

  • @silv_ Oh hey. that actually worked! Thank you 😃

  • @Aronand I've got the same problem on my 27" iMac

    Intel Core i3 3,2 GHz
    16gb DDR3 1333 MHz
    ATI Radeon HD 5670 512mb

  • hmm, can't seem to edit my previous comment, but I wanted to add the following, alas, setting the flag to ignore gpu render list, didn't solve it for me...

    Thanks for the solution.

    Same issue here.

    macOS Sierra
    10.12.2 Beta

    Macbook Air mid 2011
    1.6 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

  • Hi everybody

Same issues here to play videos on twitter, vimeo, dailymotion, facebook, arte

    Here's my macbook model :
Vivaldi 1.5.658.56 (Stable channel) (64 bits)
    Mac OS 10.9.5
    Macbook pro 15inch mid-2010
    CPU Intel i7 2,8 ghz
    Memory 8 GB 1067mhz DDR3
GPU : Nvidia GT 330m 512mo / Intel HD Graphics with 256MB DDR3 shared with main memory

I ran some tests with a raw profile in Mac OS and a raw vivaldi profile.

Here's 4 examples that don't work with Vivaldi but are ok with Safari

I tried the fix with the flag "Override software rendering list" but it didn't solve the issue.

    Thanks a lot

edit : i tried with vivaldi 1.6 RC1 but the issue is still here.

  • First, 1.6 is great. Thanks. But I have the same trouble. I can't play many videos. Some videos on NY Times "hang." In other sites "Error playing file: source not supported." Some youtube files have to be restarted. I have to keep a copy of Safari open and paste URLs. I wish that there were a way to fix this. Vivaldi is a great browser!

    OS: 1o.11.6 (El Capitan)
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro6,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5
    Processor Speed: 3.7 GHz
    Number of Processors: 1
    Total Number of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB
    L3 Cache: 10 MB
    Memory: 32 GB

  • I have this exact same problem and it is driving me slowly mad. I encounter it on a Hackintoshed ThinkPad (OSX 10.11.6 and a NVidia Quadro 1000M, running Vivaldi 1.6.689.40) and on my Mac Pro (Early 2009 (MacPro4,1), NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, OSX 10.11.6, Vivaldi 1.7.715.3).

Tellingly, it does NOT occur on my iMac workstation at work (Late 2013 edition, iMac14,2, NVidia GeForce GT 755, OSX 10.11.6, Vivaldi 1.6.689.40).

The problem does not occur in any current version of Opera, Chrome, Safari, or Firefox on any of these three computers. It's only Vivaldi, and only on those two systems.

If there's any testing necessary for this that would help make a fix happen more quickly, please let me know. As you might guess from the version number, I test prereleases on my Mac Pro regularly.

  • To clarify - the problem I'm referring to is that reported by Gorom. Tried all those videos. Have also occasionally tested with raw Vivaldi profiles, although not as often (and not with those specific videos, but with other videos on Twitter that show the same effect).

I even at one point tried copying my profile from my iMac wholesale to my Mac Pro and tried a Twitter video using that. No such luck. 😞
