Alt key opens menu, but should not…
-
...it should only open if the corresponding menu item's hotkey is pressed; Alt+t for the Tool menu item. The problem is that Alt is a common modifier key, which means I'm frequently and inadvertently opening the Menu, which requires an Esc press to close it before I can get on with my intended shortcut.

If you press your intended shortcut, e.g. Alt P to open the Settings (or preferences) dialogue, the menu does not open.
Alt is a standard Windows shortcut to focus the menu bar, so if you press and release it, the menu will open. However, if you press Alt + anykey that is not assigned to a specific menu, it will work just fine.

Just hitting the Alt key will open the Menu? Is that standard Windows behavior? I'm on Ubuntu and don't get that behavior with other apps. Intellij for instance, only opens the Menu with a corresponding Menu item key; Alt by itself does nothing.

No. It just focuses the menu bar. You then have to press Enter, or F, E, V etc. to open File, Edit, View menus, or press Esc to defocus the menu bar.

Alt opens the menu if you are using the "V" button menu.

Alt opens the menu if you are using the "V" button menu.
If you're using the browser menu bar, now it just highlights the access keys, and immediately loses focus when you release the Alt key. So, Vivaldi has one up on Notepad and other Windows apps.

I think I prefer Chromes' behavior. Their ellipsis icon only opens with the second key stroke; Alt + f.
I switched back to the horizontal menu, but its not navigateable with arrow keys.
Alt's a common modifier and I find myself resting my thumb on it while considering the next key. So when the menu steals focus, I have to escape it and do more work to achieve my goal. More work is bad -
More work is bad
However, you don't mind making more work for the Developers by being too lazy to learn the shortcuts!
How about thinking before pressing Alt rather than afterwards?
If you forget, just press the Alt key again, then press the right combination.

That's right, and why should I? I guess you haven't heard the maxim 'laziness is a virtue'. The winning product is the easiest (promotes laziness), to use. This is the developers main concern. Maybe you should raise your standards and seek better ways of doing things instead meekly settling for the way things are.

Nice work. That looks very promising.

@vipseixas On Windows at least, pressing Alt does not show the menu. It is pressing and releasing Alt that does that. If I press Ctrl+Alt+L it does not open the menu. I use Alt P to show the Settings Dialogue. It does not display the menu. Please check and tell us your OS.
