Vivaldi conflicts with the sleep mode & KVM switch
-
Hi,
I have a terrible problem with Vivaldi since the upgrade to 7.3.3635.12:
- if a PC goes to the sleeping mode, and Vivaldi is playing video in this time, the appropriate tab gets frozen after awakening, but I can close it by a mouse click
- if I use a KVM switch to return control back to the machine which is playing video in Vivaldi, the whole desktop gets frozen, so I should switch to another TTY to kill all that stuff or reboot.
I'm using https://rutube.ru to play videos, Kubuntu 24.10 / 25.04 64 bit / SDDM / X11 session. If there's no active Vivaldi running, or Vivaldi doesn't play video, everything is ok with sleep / KVM. Firefox plays those videos without any problems on the same machine

Hi, i don't have a KVM switch to test this but you can test with Chromium, which Vivaldi is based on.
Firefox is completely different.
If it work with Chromium but not with Vivaldi you can report it to the Vivaldi bug tracker.
I guess the Vivaldi team use KVM switches to test this.Cheers, mib

what about Sleep mode? Vivaldi hangs up after resume too, it's quite easy to reproduce. Also, as far as I know, Firefox is based on the Chromium engine for a very long time, all experiments with Gecko are over. Okay, I'll try to install it.
Though this bug is already filed in the Vivaldi bug tracker as VB-117016.

@ghazan We have some rare reports where after wakeup Vivaldi reacts strange.
Sad to say, but i never saw this on my Ubuntu 24.04 or Debian 12. SO i can not test your issue.

I use sleep every day on my laptop, sometimes on my desktop too.
Depends what do you meant with sleep mode, I have to send my systems to sleep, they never do this automatically.
Do you mean suspend? -
just downloaded Chromium Version 136.0.7103.92 (Official Build) snap (64-bit) - no problems at all, even with KVM

It should be already there - VB-117016.

OK, I use FN+key on my laptop.
After wake up the video has stopped but can start it then.
I cant test on https://rutube.ru/ , I test on Youtube.
Anyway, let the developers test this.
You can ask about the status of a report in the bug status thread, after some time:https://forum.vivaldi.net/topic/27450/what-is-the-status-of-vb-already-reported-bug-issue/

well, life is more complicated as I expected, as usual. I've found the very video, which hangs up both Vivaldi & Chromium: https://rutube.ru/video/37d087fc61846442a476ed4ce8a2e836/Dunno which difference does it make, but as for me it means that FF is the only browser that works in KVM's background in any case...

@ghazan
Can you add the link to your report, please.
Just reply to your confirmation mail with the link included.
If the developers verify it is a Chromium bug you can report it to their bug tracker, if you still feel like it. -

Unfortunately I can't, because I have no access to Jira

After upgrade to 7.4.3684.38 situation was slightly changed:
- the problem itself remained, but
- if I leave Vivaldi playing video as a focused, foreground window, it doesn't lock the whole desktop deadly, it reacts to mouse & keyboard, just the displayed picture isn't changed, so I can click Ctrl+Alt+T, type 'reboot' and press Enter
- if I leave Vivaldi minimized, nothing gets broken, everything works ok even after KVM switch, so I can use this method as a ugly workaround for the case
I've added this information to a bug report too.

Thanks for the update, this was the Chromium update from 134 to 136.
I guess the Chromium developers don't fix this completely, may you check again if Chromium goes 137.Cheers, mib

I installed Version Chromium 137.0.7151.27 from the beta channel, it has no problems with that video
