Vivaldi 1.3 crashes on my Macbook Pro
-
I do almost everything using a limited rights personality, as opposed to an administrator personality. Since I installed v. 1.3, every time I open the preferences in the limited rights user version, change something, and close the preferences tab, Vivaldi immediately hard crashes and disappears from the screen. I have filed numerous crash reports with Apple. I first renamed the Default folder in the Library. Same crash. I did a couple of clean installs after deleting all Vivaldi's files using the AppCleaner app, first re-installing from the administrator personality then from the limited user personality. Then I realized AppCleaner was only deleting the files from the administrator version. So yesterday I spent an hour deleting every file and folder with Vivaldi in the name from the Library of both personalities. Then I did a completely clean install of v. 1.3.551.38. Same crash. Vivaldi is now unusable for me on the Macbook. I filed more crash reports with Apple. The administrator version seems not to suffer from the same crash. Works OK on my Windows 7 pc. Can anybody suggest anything else to try? Two other issues. Vivaldi is now really heating up the battery on the Macbook. Far more than Opera. Also, pages load noticeably slowly in v. 1.3. You can watch the colour cross the address bar. I haven't used the administrator version enough to know whether it also is slow and power-hungry. Macbook Pro OS X 10.9.5 up-to-date Core i7 2.9 mhz 8 gb RAM Nothing else running except the OS

When you write "limited rights personality", you do mean that you are using a "Standard" user account in macOS that you created in "System Preferences->Users & Groups", as opposed to an "Admin" user account, right? (just to make sure I'm not on the completely wrong track)
I just created a temporary Standard user on my Mac, logged into it, started Vivaldi (1.3.582.3, the most recent developer snapshot), changed a few settings in the preferences and closed the preferences, but there was no crash afterwards. I then restarted Vivaldi and tried it a few more times, but there were still no issues. Did you maybe have Vivaldi running for both users at the same time?
What I would try is to first quit Vivaldi for both of your user accounts (if they are both logged in) and then manually delete all the following files and folders from your Standard user account to make sure that all of them are really deleted:
- /Application/Vivaldi.app (or wherever you have put the app)
- /Users/yourUsername/Library/Application Support/Vivaldi/
- /Users/yourUsername/Library/Preferences/com.vivaldi.Vivaldi.plist
- /Users/yourUsername/Library/Caches/com.vivaldi.Vivaldi/
- /Users/yourUsername/Library/Caches/Vivaldi/
(when you are in the Finder, you can get to the invisible Library folder of the currently logged in user account by holding down the ⌥ (Alt) key and then clicking on the Library entry in the Go menu)
Then I would restart your Mac just in case and reinstall Vivaldi. If the crashes still happen after you have gone through those steps, there must be something else in that user account that is interfering with Vivaldi.

Correct. I don't much like Apple's terminology since most users don't know anything about setting up a "standard" account or why that might be a good idea.

I guess I wasn't clear. I never had both versions of Vivaldi running at the same time. And, before the last clean install, I deleted all of the files you named from both the administrator account and the standard account. Then I did reboot. The only thing I didn't do was to empty the Trash, but I doubt that matters.
Thanks for your reply, and for trying to replicate my situation. I don't know how my user account could be interfering with Vivaldi. I have no other problems.
I've realized that I should post this in the comments to the blog post about the latest clean release. Maybe the Vivaldi developers can take a look at all the error reports I submitted to Apple. Thanks again.

Since I was not able to replicate the issue I was trying to come up with potential reasons for why you experience the issue (even after deleting all Vivaldi files) and I didn't. One idea was the two Vivaldis running at the same time, the other was that maybe some files slipped through the deletion process. Those are apparently not the reason and I agree that emptying the trash not would make a difference.
So what is causing the issue on your system but not on mine? Maybe the version of macOS? You're running 10.9.5 and I am running 10.11.6. Have you tried creating a fresh new dummy Standard account to see if Vivaldi crashes with that account, too? If it doesn't, that would suggest that some setting or so in the existing Standard account is contributing to the issue; if it crashes there too, that would lend further support to the notion that type of the account is really causing the crash.

Good idea to create another standard account, NSSynapse. I'll try it and report back.

I created a new standard account. I took the trouble to change some of the System Preferences in that account to match my preferences. Then I installed Vivaldi v. 1.3 by going into the administrator account and reinstalling Vivaldi from the v. 1.3.551.38 dmg file. In the new account, I entered Vivaldi and changed only two preferences under the Privacy category, to limit cookies to session cookies and to bar 3rd-party cookies. When I closed the Preferences window, Vivaldi crashed and disappeared exactly as reported above. I sent a report to Apple.
Then I realized that I should have tried it without changing any System Preferences, in other words I should have used a plain vanilla standard account. So I created yet another standard account. I changed nothing. I installed Vivaldi by again going into the administrator account and running the v. 1.3.551.38 dmg file. Then I opened Vivaldi in the new standard account and changed only the same two cookie preferences mentioned above. When I closed the Preferences tab, Vivaldi crashed and disappeared in exactly the same way described above. I sent a report to Apple.
At this point, I can only turn this over to the Vivaldi developers. I'll try the next version in the stable stream.

Thanks, ImaJem. Your animation captures my crash as well.
The great old printer I was preserving by not upgrading OS X has finally died and been replaced. Maybe it's time I upgraded the OS to see if the Vivaldi problem will go away.
Thanks for your info.

I've amended what I think is BigMac's bug report (VB-20831) by the information that the crash does not seem be restricted to Standard accounts on macOS 10.9.6. I don't have access to a machine that still runs 10.9, so I am not able to reproduce the issue, but it does look like it's an issue with Vivaldi on that version of macOS. I haven't seen any other reports about it either.
Regardless of when/if this issue will get fixed, moving to a more recent version of macOS is certainly a good idea. Usually, Apple only supplies the three most recent versions of macOS with security updates, so some time after 10.12 will get released this fall, support for Mavericks will likely stop. In addition, you will see more and more 3rd party applications drop support for 10.9.

I'm happy to report that upgrading OS X to v. 10.11.6 has cured the problem of Vivaldi crashes. Strange. I usually expect problems to arise from upgrading the OS, not from failing to upgrade the OS.
Thanks to NSSynapse and ImaJem for your help.
