Better, faster results in the address field – Vivaldi Browser snapshot 3592.3

@supermurs: Some comments on why would be helpful if you would like us to improve things in the future.
-
@supermurs: Would you not think it was better to fix up any complaints than maintain two sperate implementations, one of which is bound to get less attention or prevent us using resources elsewhere?
-
I didn't mean to be offensive, I apologize if I came out wrong as that was not my intention. You guys are doing a great job and I appreciate you very much!
For me the pre-omnibox address bar was better than for example the awesomebar from Firefox. It searches and suggests successfully from history, search engine, bookmarks.
The omnibox unfortunately does not, so I feel it is a step back in functionality.

@Ruarí
Hi, as @supermurs mention, if omnibox get a priority list I am fine with it.
This is an outstanding feature of Vivaldi.Cheers, mib

@supermurs: You can find your bookmarks and history with the new address field. Search engine nicknames (e.g., “w wikipedia”) still works. We’re interested in any specific use cases you’re no longer able to complete. E.g., does it take you more typing to get to a page you frequently visit? In general, the new address field should get you where you want to go with less typing than before while not showing an overwhelmingly large list of options.
-
One thing I noticed is that the new address bar doesn't find visited sites from browsing history as well as the older address bar.
I'll add some screenshots below.
Search for "Bukovina" with new address bar:
No hits from history, only search suggestions.
Search for "Bukovina" with old address bar:
Search suggestions and also hits from history.
I'm happy to provide more details if needed!

@daniel
Hi, an example, I disabled prioritize bookmarks.
It show bookmarks, which I not want but not history even the page is open and shown in the history. -
@supermurs That is interesting. Please go to vivaldi://omnibox, repeat the search with the search field on that page, click the Download button on that page, and email it to da at vivaldicom.

@daniel
Interesting, it shows the history page in the vivaldi://omnibox page but not in the address bar.

Not sure if it's been reported yet, but this update broke the search box for me completely - i can't select any of the search provides either with mouse or by using up/down buttons, now it only uses the one that was either selected before the update or the default settings. Tried resetting the parameters without deleting the custom search providers, no luck
-
@tsa-work That is a known bug.
Was reporetd to Vvaldi as:
VB-113756 "cannot switch searchengines in addressbar searchfield" - Confirmed. -

As I said it does take me more typing to get the result I am after. I think a big part of that is due to the abbreviated list. I had no problem with the large list of suggestions, it covers more variables
Why the push for the omnibox anyway? It strips out configuration (a Vivaldi strong point) and relies on calculation instead
-
@mib2berlin: Thank you for sharing the data with us. The new address field is actually showing the expected URL as the first suggestion in the drop-down. The drop-down has merged the Bookmark and History scores and put it at the first/best suggestion in the drop-down.

@daniel
Hrm, after a restart of Vivaldi it is shown, I have to test this more.EDIT: Yes, I open a page, close it and search.
It only show the bookmark but not the history.Is this the combinated result?
By the way, I have bookmarks and history disabled in the old priority list, I don't want to show them up in the address field. -
[Settings][Find] Make “Toggle open/close of ‘find in page’ with the same hotkey…” a setting (VB-112998)
I am glad I was so vocal about this and just want to say THANK YOU.
It's been 4 weeks and I still find myself pressing Ctrl+F for this (which is how I realised it's back to the old behaviour).

Yep. What was wrong with the previous feature? Shouldn't you be focusing on the ad-blocker currently? I mean if you really are going to make it to have the same features as ublock origin (really?!), it means A LOT of work. There's only few months left.
@ Vivaldi team: is the new "omnibox" going to have configuration like the old one? Are we able to select what to show in the future?
-
@Pathduck I sent you a personal message

I like the new omnibox, it gives better results for me then the previous address bar, which sometimes prioritized less frequent urls from history over more frequent ones. Thanks for your work on this marvelous browser.
