Loading privious session doesn't work

  • Hi there, After I installed the newest build of Windows (Build 1607) on my PC (my Laptop isn't affected, Vivaldi discards all Tabs of the previous session, although "restore the previous session" is activated in the settings. The pinned tabs are restoring just fine, but all normal tabs get completely lost after restarting the browser. Then, after a few days, a new version of Vivaldi came out. I installed it in hope this would fix the issue, but it didn't. Can you please please please help me? Kind regards

    @Geco:

    Hi there,

After I installed the newest build of Windows (Build 1607) on my PC (my Laptop isn't affected, Vivaldi discards all Tabs of the previous session, although "restore the previous session" is activated in the settings.
The pinned tabs are restoring just fine, but all normal tabs get completely lost after restarting the browser.
Then, after a few days, a new version of Vivaldi came out. I installed it in hope this would fix the issue, but it didn't.

Can you please please please help me?

    Kind regards

This behavior has been tied to some extensions. Do you use any?

  • Yes I'm using some. But I've used the same extensions in the previous build of Windows AND the previous build of Vivaldi. Also I still use the same extensions on my laptop, without any issues there.
The issues starter with the upgrade to the new windows build, but Vivaldi is the only browser experiencing this issue. Chrome, IE, Edge and Firefox are saving the seisin just as expected. Also the issue occurs after restart of the PC only. When I'm starting Vivaldi after closing it without restarting the PC it works just fine…

It's still probably an extension. You're not the first to report this, and various extensions have been implicated, not just one.

Refresh your profile and then reinstall your extensions one at a time. Either the problem will go away and not return, or one of the extensions will cause it to start up again when it's reinstalled.

  • What do you mean by "refresh your profile"?

  • Check Help/About for the path of your Profile.
    Close Vivaldi.
Rename the Folder - e.g. to Default.Saved - so that nothing is lost.
Restart Vivaldi (a new Default folder will be created automatically) and check.
If it makes no difference, then just delete the new Default and rename the old one back.
Note: If the new profile solves the problem. Any Extensions used will have to be reinstalled (one at a time and recheck after each).
Bookmarks files etc. can just be copied from the saved profile to the new one.

  • I will test that tomorrow and report back if it helped or not.

  • I checked it now.
I've renamed the Default folder to Default.BAK, then I opened Vivaldi, opened up the Tabs I've saved in a Text-Editor, checked if "restore last session" is set, closed Vivaldi, restarted my PC and voila, nothing happened. Vivaldi still starts with a blank session, except for the pinned tabs. Without any extension installed or any setting changed.

Is there anything else I can do/check to solve this bug?

How do you "open up the tabs you've saved in a text editor?"

And is your settings dialog "Startup With [x] Last Session" translated to "Startup With [x] Restore Last Session?"

Do you have any 3rd party security, privacy or cleaner software on your machine? We've seen this once before where a user's cleaner software was "cleaning" Vivaldi's session on PC restart.

Did you close Vivaldi before you restarted your PC?

Are you running Vivaldi from an external drive of some kind?

Really - none of this makes any sense.

  • I select to URL, copy it, open a new tab, paste the URL and hit enter.

No, it's translated with "Startup with Last Session". Sorry, I didn't remember every bit of it and didn't have the settings page open, when I wrote it.

No, I don't. I have Avast installed, but only the following components of avast:
    File Shield (The Actual Scanner)
Web Shield (Scans Downloads and something like that)
Mail Shield (For local E-Mail Clients)

I close Vivaldi every time I restart my PC. But as I mentioned, the Tabs are lost only after restarting the PC and only in Vivaldi. Not in Firefox, not in Waterfox, not in Chrome, Opera, Edge, IE, but only Vivaldi.

I'm running Vivaldi from my local drive D:. C is a 128GB SSD and for Windows.

I know that it doesn't make any sense to me, that's why I wrote this here in the Forum because it only can be a bug or something. And I think a developer would be able to eliminate this bug after some code digging or something…. At least I can't imagine any other source for that strange behavior of Vivaldi.

Have you white-listed Vivaldi and its directory in all modules of Avast? Avast is known to interfere with normal Vivaldi function, because Avast authors don't know about Vivaldi, apparently, and Avast is paranoid Vivaldi might be up to something.

  • I don't think avast knows about Waterfox and everything is working fine here too.
I don't have whitelisted it. The only module to mention is the File Shield and that's an On-Access Scanner. It doesn't block something, just out of assumption. It scans files on access and gives an alarm if there is something virus-like detected. But it didn't alarm about anything in years and also in logs and protocols there is just nothing, except for one file I wrote myself in C++ in Visual Studio. So, nothing to mention here.
Also, everything worked fine before the upgrade of Windows 10 on both, Laptop and PC.
After the upgrade, it doesn't on PC, but it still works fine after upgrade on my Laptop.
Except that, everything on my PC is just as before.

I think it can only be a bug because not only other browsers like Waterfox aren't affected on PC, but also with the same setup of Antivirus-Software and Security settings on my Laptop after upgrading on the very same day it still works fine there for Vivaldi too.

Which means it is not a bug in Vivaldi.

It's a corrupt file or an environmental factor.

  • Wich one could it be then?
And what can I do except for reinstalling?
I don't want to set up everything from scratch.
Or is it possible to save Settings and Profile before reinstalling, so that I can first verify if the issue is gone and then try to replace settings and profile and then check again if it still works?
I can save the Profile, but are the Vivaldi settings also part of the Profile? Or do a have to export a file or something?
Or is there anything else I can try first?

  • Hi, you can´t backup passwords and extension all other settings and bookmark can be copied back.

    https://help.vivaldi.com/article/full-reset-of-vivaldi/

    Cheers, mib

  • I don't save passwords in browsers.
Settings and Bookmarks are important, as well as extensions.
    Extensions are the most important.
But Extensions are saved in the profile and i can save that before performing an reset, can't I?

The Default folder that you refreshed IS your profile. You can save it aside,

Reinstalling will not disturb your preferences, settings and extensions. That's why it's usually a waste of time. Preferences, settings, extensions, etc. is almost ALWAYS where the trouble is.

For a complete and utter new install, uninstall the software, delete the Application and User Data folders (or put the User Data folder or at least the Default folder somewhere where you can fetch data out of it, but not in the normal install directory) and install the new version. Test to see if it's performing properly. If so, put your vital data such as bookmarks and login data back (JUST DATA), no extensions), and then reinstall your extensions one at a time, testing for a return of the problem as you go. If the problem reappears with a certain extension, get rid of that extension.

I'll try things out until the weekend. It's an annoying thief of time because I have to restart the whole PC every time I need to check if I can move on to the next setting or extension…
I'll give you guys a feedback then.

  • any resolution for this? i have no extensions running
it won't restore previous settings, whether it was 3 tabs or 30
i have tried toggling those settings, but not deleting my massive browsing history.
the good news? it is forcing me to work from the History list, which seems more efficient
the only thing running in taskmanager that is even remotely shady, is that Antimalware Service Executable that never stays gone. i could try disabling that and redoing the settings again. will edit post if anything different happens.

  • update to previous post:
that didn't work, but what did was downloading an old snapshot from a couple months ago
(i was running "stable", which i thought to be, well, stable.)
had to dig up an old one because of the new 'delta' system, and the absurd request for us to "guess the urls"
sorry,Ruarí Ødegaard, i will not play your guessing game
