Vivaldi on the Mac App Store
-
Hello Community and devs, I am about to receive a MacBook from my school, and as I have used Vivaldi on Windows for the past year, I want to install it on my (future) Mac. However, as I have heard from older students, .dmg file install is not allowed and it can only be done with an administrator password. Only applications on the Mac App Store is available. So, I would like to know if Vivaldi is on the App Store. If not, I would like to know if there are any plans for it to be on the app store. An answer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I don't remember ever seeing a browser on the Mac App Store. This is likely, at least in part, due to the fact that it is important for browser vendors to be able to roll out security fixes swiftly and with the MAS, it can easily happen that your update gets stuck in review for 2-3 weeks, which would run counter to that goal. The tight sandboxing restrictions of the MAS are likely an issue, too.
It is possible, though, that you can "install" (for most apps that simply means copying the app from the disk image to your local drive) Vivaldi to the Applications folder in your home folder instead of to the general system-wide Applications folder. For that, I don't think you need administrator rights and I would think that Vivaldi would not mind being run from there. I don't have any first hand experience with this and it's also possible that your school uses a different approach than just restricting your account to non-admin accounts. It's definitely worth a shot, though.

Thanks,
I believe they are using the parental controls built into the Mac.

My understanding is that Apple forbids any but webkit browsers on their devices, running their rendering engine and their Javascript engine. To get their approval to include in the store, I'm pretty sure you have to offer your browser on those engines, and then get Apple's approval to offer it in the store.

You can reset the root password on the recovery partition, if your macbook has one. Open terminal and type
resetpassword
