This UI theme I use does a good job of indicating the current tab.

You can also use a combination of
Pinned Tabs, tab stacks, workspaces and sessions to organize your opened tabs

so basically you need better UI polish like google material design?

With this extension, duplicates simply do not occur.

Posting to add my vote. Having easier to use tab groups would be nice. Tab stacking, accordion, etc., make it more of a hassle than it should be.

Coming from Arc this is also something that seems relatively obvious and that is sorely missing.

I think it should be possible to make some kind of visual box for a tile group to be represented in, in the tab bar. (Yes, this would have to be different for horizontal and vertical tab bars.)
