Hardcore Opera fan migrated to Vivaldi
-
After using Opera for 15+ years, I decided it's move to another browser because the old Opera (always used that one with Presto) isn't good anymore for most of today's websites. Thankfully, I found Vivaldi, which seems to be the best alternative, but here are some things I really miss from old Opera:
-
Bookmarks menu. Maybe this feature really exists, but I didn't wand a way to have "Bookmarks" sub-menu in top menu bar. Even Firefox (which has super minimalistic interface and almost 0 options to tweak) offers it.
-
Option to select and copy partial link text (Opera was the only browser I knew, which had this feature). For example, if link title is "SOME LINK HERE", Opera would allow to select text like "E LINK H". This is super useful for web devs.
-
Vertical panel. Once again, maybe I just missed this feature, but I couldn't find a way to disable it for sure.
-
Downloads tab. Probably every single browser I know has a separate Downloads window, where you can view status of each download, including download speed, time remaining, etc. Vivaldi only has Downloads section in side panel, and information displayed there is very minimal (no speed, for example). Furthermore, you need to expand whole panel a lot in order to see more details (like full name of file being downloaded, if it's long enough).
-
Caching issues. Very often I need to manually reload some page (if I visited it earlier today) to see new content, because old cached content is displayed. Neither old Opera or other modern browsers have this issue.
-
I found many pages to cause problems for rendering engine. For example:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz/help/phone-idle-using-battery-t3521759
Scroll down, until you see page selector. This is how it looks in all browsers (even out-of-date Opera) - https://postimg.org/image/q9wu2xfxl/
This is how it looks in Vivaldi (before and after clicking) - https://postimg.org/image/88dp54lwp/ and https://postimg.org/image/nv4yihzop/
Also, noticed some CMS causes problems for Vivaldi. For example, I use Kayako Support Desk (multiple copies on different websites). If I bookmark URL where support tickets are displayed, 9 out of 10 times Vivaldi does endless redirect to THE SAME url (closing browser and cleaning cache helps rarely). Other browsers work just fine.
So far, I still like the browser much more than old Opera, FF or Chrome, and hope these issues will get sorted. Using the latest 1.6.x release.

Thanks for the F4 hint. Well, if someone else also requested for an option to copy link text and see downloads output, it means I'm not the only one who needs these features back from Opera, and hopefully they will be added.
-
@toxpal and don't forget, F4 works nicely as a mouse gesture (though I use Easygesture, so I stopped using Opera and thus Vivaldi built-in gestures a year or two back).
There's also a nice one 'hide interface' which puts everything away and pulls it all out again (better than remembering selectively 'show/hide' bookmarks/addybar/whatever other trash is taking up space...
Ctrl F11
Lovely one, don't miss it. -
I have full access to all these servers, never had any problems (tested using old/new Opera, different versions of FF (and its works), Chrome, and IE. What exactly should I look for?
-
@toxpal - 1. I get around this by putting all my non-bookmark bar bookmarks in a single hierarchical folder at the left end of the bookmark bar.
Bookmark menu is sure to come. In fact most everything you mentioned will be available sooner or later. Jon's aim is that if Old Opera could do it, Vivaldi will do it, and do it better.
