painful bugs: Empty gray tabs, standard search fails
-
Hello everyone,
I'd like to share a couple of painful bugs which really make me thinking about switching main browser. I want to understand if they are common or not and may be to hear something from devs (they're busy, though, I know). Or may be someone will help to deal with at least one of them.
The most painful bug was introduced 3-4 snapshots ago and and in 2 words it is "usually links are opened as grey tabs unless I open another tab, copy the address there and go". Peculiar thing is - DOM is actually loaded (loading progress is shown, sound from a video is hearable, DOM inspector shows presumably unaltered DOM), but only grey background is shown. A random exmaple I've encountered a minute ago:
I followed a link in a vk post and it got opened as a grey tab. DOM inspector shows usual html.
And with Google.spreadsheets it behaves even worse, since no refreshing, no extra tab opening works and I'm able to work with them only in rare ocasions. Usually I see this (immediately or after clicking somewhere inside the sheet or some other action):
After the last update th situation got somewhat better, though, looks like I'm able to see the content after opening another tab.. sometimes. Also sometimes iframed videos don't work. Usually opening youtube ones in a separate tab and opening another tab with the same address helps, but its totally awkward.
Another one was introduced.. hm.. a month or more ago. It's not that painful: it's the default search engine is not working (I always have to type the prefix ("y my search request" instead of "my search request") but paired with the fact that search suggestions still work for me only with DuckDuckGo (no Google, no Yandex, no Wikipedia, no nothing), it really annoys and makes me think "really, man, should I switch to another browser? This is something to be fixed, not bear or make me switch!" (I've never seen working suggestions aside DuckDuckGo and, if I'm not mistaken, en Wiki)
Before updating to 1.6.682.3, I've switched off all the plugins and retested all this after updating.. still all these painful problems are there. Please fix this or help in another manner.
PS usually I use AdBlock, Stylish and Tampermonkey, but like I said, I've disabled them before updating and that didn't help.

Have you filled the "Suggest URL" fields for those search engines? I have the search suggestions working for Google, YouTube and Wikipedia (both in the address bar and the search bar, though they don't work in private windows, which is quite disappointing btw...). Take suggestions from @den_po.
PS. You might also want to edit out your e-mail address from your second screenshot...

@pafflick Sorry, forgot to thank you. The only thing that surprises me is DuckDuckGo search suggestions work without setting them, which is great. What disappoints is it's somewhat hard to find which address to set for a search engine, so thanks for the link.
PS not sure why I can't edit my initial post, but thanks for pointing the thing about email.

Still has the issue with the default search engine. Funny enough, search suggestions do work when I'm typing without prefix, but when I hit enter, the search query is interpreted as an url I mean, even if I click a suggestion of "test", I'm brought to http://test/
-
@YakovL_ You can get the URL for a searchengine when you rightclick in a searchfield (like the googlesearchfield) and than select "add as searchengine"
If you can't see it in the popup go to vivaldi settings --> search there you can see every searchengine listed so you can edit them and view the search URL that is used -
Nope, doesn't work for me that way: when I use "add as search engine", the suggestions URL field is empty.
-
Strange, although I think I read about a few searchengines that can't be "collected" like this but never encountered one myself.
Mind to share what searchengine(s) you want to add? -
-
@zaibon well, it's better to ask which search engines are supposed to autofill the suggest url field, because for me even Google doesn't do that:
-
@iAN-CooG yeap, I've done that, so I'm ok with most search engines I use and can live without autosuggestions for others. Still, the 2 painful bugs this thread is about are "empty" (gray) tabs and default search engine not working (without the shortkey before the query). This first one is much more painful, of'course.

The time limit for editing your own posts is one hour. After that, you can ask forum's moderator to edit the post for you, if you need to change something.

Check "Search in Address Field" option in vivaldi://settings/search/ to fix this.

That's because every website can use various methods and different syntax to handle their search suggestions. Even though on a surface it looks like it's just a search suggestion feature which works pretty much the same everywhere, in reality, the scripts "under the hood" are completely different from what is used to handle the search itself.
While search address is usually pretty obvious (most search engines use the GET method and for those using the POST method you can grab the search address by inspecting the search form code or simply using the "Add as Search Engine" function). But the search suggestions are more complicated. There is no standard method here (like POST and GET), so for each website you'd have to actually sniff the code to find where the search suggestions are obtained from. It could be very difficult sometimes since many major websites use plenty of compressed JavaScript code, which is hard to analyze.
I've tried myself to obtain search suggestions for two websites that I visit quite often and in one case I failed to get a working search suggestion URL (I found it, but it didn't return any data) and in the other case I found the search suggestion URL and it returned the search suggestions correctly, but then it turned out that it doesn't work in the browser, most likely because Vivaldi search suggestion feature doesn't support the syntax that the website was using...

@pafflick ah, great, thanks. Looks like some update just unchecked this option (I've set it some time ago), not broke the search mechanism itself! Right, -1 problem.

So no web-standart for that yet, right? That's a pity, although very understandable.
Speaking of search, I've got one problem left, though: search queries containing dots. Ok if I type node.js, it's clear that such request is interpreted as a url. But if I type g node.js, I'd expect that to be interpreted as "search in google for node.js" (I've got the g shortcut for google search).
May be I'm missing something again? Or should I file a bug report?
PS According to my notes, I've already reported a bug report a while ago.
-
It's a regression on current 1.7.725.3 snapshot, I guess it has been already reported by someone, as it was already noticed in the blog comments.

True story, fixed now. Now this should be renamed into "1 painful bug". Sometimes it requires to open even 3 tabs with the same url to get one that displays the content..

which url for example?

@iAN-CooG well, finally that happened again so I can show one: https://planeta.ru/campaigns/withoutreindeer
I'm not sure if that depends on a PC's load, though (this time it was overloaded and hanged for a minute a short time after). -
Can't replicate, the page renders immediately here, either clicked or ctrl-clicked.
-
@iAN-CooG sorry, forgot to answer at once. Well, this bug never was a reproducible one. I mean, once I've got this problem with a page, it's usually reproducible when I open the page, close it and open via the link again; but once I "repair" it (usually by opening another copy via the link, not via duplicating the tab; or, recently, closing and opening from trash bin started to help), I can no longer reproduce it (for a particular page). And like I said, I also suspect that the problem rises only when a PC is somewhat loaded, so not sure if this is reproducible on a well-performing one at all.
